Forest Park is a city in Cleveland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. Forest Park was first organized as a town on December 3, 1823. The first municipal building was built in 1834 and it was also the first courthouse in that township. On November 15, 1846, Forest Park became a city and its first mayor was George Aitken. In 1898, when Cleveland became an independent city, Forest Park annexed what is now the southernmost portion of Akron City Limits. When Akron City Limits were re-created as part of the new city of Cleveland on January 1, 1999, all but one block of Township Street in Forest Park were annexed into the newly created downtown district of Cleveland Heights. The original forest park includes 5 blocks east of I-4806 along State Route 9 about 2 miles north from Euclid Avenue between First and Second streets It included land donated by Jeptha Holland to form what would become known as "The Lakes". According to local legend (or maybe true), when President James Kapp acquired some land for his estate here he asked Holland if he could keep any trees or woodchips that grew on it because he needed them for his sawmill operation back home in Illinois. Holland said "No," but Kapp took him up on it and within weeks had started growing logs right there on site! The mills continued until 1910 when they closed down due to World War I hostilities; however they reopened after hostilities ended with the return of America's economic prosperity In 1922-24 Hudson Brothers Developments operated a large grocery store at 8362 Euclid Ave., which remain extant today as One Tree Hill Center apartments . In 1924 streetcars ran through this area called "The Woods" because no real woods existed then During those years much creative effort went into developing this urban open space including creating two baseball diamonds (the old one still stands) well beyond any other public recreation area east of Lake Erie at that time
The Forest Park neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio was developed in the early 1800s. It is named after a natural forest that once surrounded the community. The area has since been annexed by Cleveland and now includes much of Downtown Cleveland. In 1814, General George Washington visited Forest Park and recommended that land be set aside for public use in the area. The first residents of Forest Park were Italian immigrants who constructed their homes on top of an ancient cedar tree. In 1837, a group of young businessmen from New York City founded the First National Bank in Forest Park. The bank helped to create a downtown business district that still exists today. In 1920, President Warren G Harding made his home in Forest Park and served as its Mayor from 1923 until his death in 1924. During his term, he built two parks within the neighborhood: Forrest Lake and North Shore Drive Recreation Area. Harding also funded many civic projects such as building a new library and playground in Oakwood Cemetery which are still popular today.
