The first area open to public use was called "Lakewood", but it soon proved inadequate for residents who wanted easy access to nature trails as well as picnicking by Lake Erie shoreline. In 1889 commissioners named their new park after Major General David Dixon Wright – one half owner/managerof Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) Common Land – which made it possible for citizens living west of Dayton on Brushy Creek Road northward along I-71 (then US-19) to graze their horses there without fear they would lose them in warring neighborhoods back east or up north!
