Forest Park is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 11,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the southern border of Akron. The city was named for forested land east of it on which settlers built homes in 1814 and 1815. The first post office in Forest Park was established in 1827, and its first Mayor was David Wills. In 1902, two years after Cleveland's incorporation as a city, Forest Park became an independent municipality with its own police department and fire department. In 1937, when Cleveland annexed the neighboring towns of Mayfield Heights and Eastlake, Forest Park lost much of its character as a rural community with small farms that continued to exist until 1977 when they were combined into one new township called Mayfield Heights-Eastlake Township. In 2002, the City Council voted to change the name from "Forest Park" to "Lakewood". In 1938, Lakewood replaced Forest park as the city's primary source of water supply through municipal annexation into Lakewood Township; however water service still remains available to both cities through private wells providing supplemental drinking water for residents throughout their respective jurisdictions today. In 1951, three blocks south of downtown (in what is now known as "Old Detroit") an entirely new town – called North Olmsted – was organized by amalgamating two other municipalities: Cleveland's Highlandtown neighborhood had been annexed by West Side Highway in 1920 following riots over disputed lot sizes within Highlandtown itself; while Eastlake Township formed from parts of South Euclid Avenue and Whitehall Avenue following a civil rights protest there against racism perpetrated by county sheriff Jim Crow patrols stationed outside those neighborhoods during that period. Forest Park is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 27,815 at the 2010 census and was 31,521 at the 2013 estimate. Forest Park is part of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga-Summit County metropolitan area. The first settler in Forest Park was John Pemberton in 1814. Pemberton named his land for himself and his wife, Maria Pemberton (née Webster). In 1824, Daniel Webster bought 5 acres of land from John Pemberton for $1 per acre. Webster donated this land to the city of Cleveland as part of a gift from his wife's father-in-law. The first public school in Forest Park opened in 1827. In 1830, David Bancroft donated two lots adjoining what is now State Route 71 to the city for use as a parkland called "Bancroft Park" after him and his wife Hannah Bancroft (née Morse). The park included an arena, ballfields, fortifications, playgrounds and ponds that are still used today by City residents and their children during summertime programming such as picnics or swimming across the river. In 1876 General George Armstrong Custer fought on American soil while serving with Native American forces under General Crook during what became known as The Great Sioux War; he died near present day Uniontown Township when his horse got stuck between two boulders while grazing nearby on July 25th., 1890 (). Many people who knew him remarked upon how peaceful he appeared even during these trying times.- however some events took place here that led to Custer's death: On October 6th., 1890 three days after Custer's death some protesters were removed from Government Hill by order of General Crook; they had been collecting money to support Sitting Bull's resistance against white settlers encroaching into Indian Territory
The first forest in Forest Park was planted by the Ohio Forestry Association in 1892. The area now includes portions of both Cleveland and Akron counties. In 1896, the Ohio Supreme Court ordered the state government to take action to protect the park's rare trees. The court found that the timber industry was damaging the park's resources and needed to be stopped. In 1907, a new golf course was built on what is now Spring Road in Forest Park. The course became popular with locals and tourists alike, and has been used for several major tournaments since its creation. In 1944, a fire destroyed part of Oneonta Lake which made it difficult for people to access the park; this event helped change Forest Park from a rural area into a city center.
