When Forest Park, Ohio was first settled in the 1800s, it was a small town of about 800 people. The settlers were farmers and hunters who grew crops and hunted game here. They used natural light to see in the dark and built their homes with wood-framed windows that faced east. In the 1830s, one of the earliest landowners in Forest Park was David Browder. He bought land on the edge of town and started to build a home using sawmills he had purchased from Indians. This helped him become wealthy and buy more land around Forest Park. The first school in Forest Park opened in 1838. It was called Greenfield Female Academy because it was run by women! In 1846, when Ohio became a state,Forest Park became part of Lucas County. The first county courthouse was built here in 1851. In 1865, a group of businessmen decided to start an electric transmission line from Toledo TO Cleveland so they could get better prices for goods being shipped across the United States. They named their company “Ohio Electric Railway” and started construction on this line! This helped make Cleveland one of the biggest cities in America! In 1898, Ohio Electric Railway merged with Erie Railroad to form the Pennsylvania Railroad! In 1907, two brothers named George Washington Smith opened up a grocery store next door to their house on Montague Street in Forest Park. This store soon became known as “The GW Smith Store” because its founders were both named George Washington Smith! In 1908, The GW Smith Store moved out into its own building on Superior Avenue near High School (now Midtown). In 1912, The GWSmith Store merged with J&J Coffee Company to create The Cincinnati Coffee Company! During World War I (1914-1918), The Cincinnati Coffee Company produced coffee for military troops stationed overseas! In 1925, The GWSmith Store merged again with J&J Coffee Company to become THE JOINT STORE OF AMERICAN COFFEE COMPANIES!!! When this merger happened, THE JOINT STORE OF AMERICAN COFFEE COMPANIES became affiliated with Starbucks Corporation!!!

Forest Park was founded in 1824 as a small village on the edge of what is now the city of Cleveland. The name originated from two tracts of land that were donated by General David Rittenhouse to establish a forest for his estate in 1825. In 1870, when Cleveland became a city, it annexed much of Farmington Township and added much of woodland to its boundaries, including almost all of what is now Forest Park. The area that includes today's Forest Park was originally owned by John Husted and others who managed the land for their estates during this time period. The first public park in ForestPark was called simply "the Woods" due to its location on Husted's estate just outside present day ForestPark limits. It served as an open space for villagers and their dogs until1830 when it was leased byCLEVELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO CONSTRUCT A SCHOOL which became known as "Oak Hill". Construction began on Oak Hill on October 16th, 1830 and finished three weeks later with classes starting on November 5thember 1830 (the date oak hill still stands). On December 25th 1830 Mayor James McDermott dedicated Oak Hill School to serve as both a school and community center for residents within the new City Of Cleveland
