Forest Park is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the largest community in Greater Cincinnati. It is located on the banks of the Little Miami River east of downtown Cincinnati. The population was 61,651 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-largest city in Greater Cincinnati behind Dayton, Wilford City and Franklin Township. The first settlers in what is now Forest Park were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1788. They named their new Village of Forest after a large forest near Glasgow, Scotland. In 1810, they built a sawmill on White River to provide lumber for their village and other settlements along the river. By 1830 they had also erected two churches: one Congregational and one Baptist. In 1835, when Fort Pitt was established on the nearby campus of West Point Military Academy to serve as an arsenal, Forest Park became part of Hamilton County and its government moved from Lancaster to downtown Cincinnati under Mayor John Grier Hunt with plans to create a commercial center adjacent to Fort Pitt's arsenal site that would be called "the Promenade." The business district around today's Winton Road intersection began developing as early as 1840 with stores such as Ebenezer Eaton & Son (founded 1841), Grier Hunt House (1848), J H Baldwin (1851), A S Slocum (1853) and others opening up along this busy artery including Drury's grocery store (opened 1861). In 1850s smallpox killed many people living near Fort Pitt so residents decided not to build closer to cannon pointed fortifications made out of sandbags because it would have been too risky for themselves and their families if something terrible happened during an attack by Native Americans or anyone else seeking revenge for earlier killings within our town limits caused by them or any other Indian tribe member...By 1860 only 10% of homes still standing in present day Forest Park were built prior to that date; most were frame structures consisting only OF wooden framing/ rafters/ clapboard siding...Most homes constructed prior to 1860 are 1 story tall with sided gable roofs featuring full eaves over large window openings typical feature throughout Appalachians before World War II...The majority ofFrame construction took place between 1830- 1860 which included much rebuilding following devastating fire which destroyed entire mainframe building complex back then;mostly single family residences close together on narrow lots surrounded by fields until late 1800s when more sprawling development occurred starting with high rise blocks like Chase Tower seen today across SW corner lot next To library
