In Forest Park, Ohio, the gun target history can be traced back to 1857. At that time, the land that makes up today’s Forest Park was part of the Township of Findlay. The first gun target in Forest Park was erected on what is now the corner of West Jefferson and East Washington Streets. It consisted of a post with a circle around it made out of logwood. The target could be aimed by moving the arm from side to side or up and down. The first guns used in Civil War battle were field artillery pieces brought over from Europe. These cannons had long barrels and could shoot shells at a range of more than 100 yards. They were used for shelling troops and their supplies as well as for strafing aircraft flying overhead. In 1863, one such cannon was brought over by wagon to sites in Forest Park and Green Lawn Cemetery where it continued to be used until 1865 when it became law enforcement arsenal number C-2 at the United States Customs House on Main Street in Forest Park (now inside University Circle). During Reconstruction period following 1867 American Civil War, many African Americans began arriving in Ohio seeking freedom from slavery. Many blacksmiths also began working in agriculture so they could afford firearms which they could use for self-defense against white men who considered them second class citizens (Fletcher Library photo). The Forest Park Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1892. The club shot at a range in the park from its establishment until 1907, when it moved to the current site. In 1912, Forest Park had its first pistol match, which was won by George S. Warfield of Akron. In 1915, Forest Park hosted the world's first rifle match with a field of 100 shooters across 10 different nations. The match was won by America's favorite rifleman, Samuel Colt of Kentucky. In 1927, the club merged with nearby Garfield Rifle & Pistol Club and became known as Garfield-Forest Park Rifle & Pistol Club. In 1934, the club changed its name again to Forest Park Rifle and Pistol Clubs Incorporated (FPRC). FPRC held its first regular pistol matches on October 16th 1934 at an old quarry near Dayton that has since been converted into a shooting range. In 1961-1962 FPRC conducted their only international competition when they entered two teams of five women into the Morrocco Cup using surplus World War II military rifles imported from Europe. They also competed in annual games against other clubs around Ohio during that time period including winning back-to-back championships in 1941 and 1942 for Trap shooting events contested at Canfield Agricultural Fairgrounds on November 9th and 10th respectively.
Forest Park is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Forest Park was first settled by people of English descent in 1795. In 1802, a group of Germans from Steubenville, Ohio founded the village of Forest Hills on land adjacent to what is now Forest Park. The town name was changed to Forest Park in 1881 after a donation from banker Andrew Mellon. In 1865, an act was passed creating Franklin County and giving it its present borders including portions of today's Middleburg Heights and parts of today's Louisville Township (now Evansville). One reason for this wide border may have been because much of what is now Forest Park had been part of Lucas Valley which served as the county seat until 1861 when Frankfort became the new county seat. Today much of that old Lucas Valley remains within Franklin County but also includes part of Dayton and other neighboring counties as well as portions of Hamilton Township in Kentucky. Forest Park began forming rapidly during one period or another around 1830-40 with small settlements near Lebanon Road and Indian Creek where men hunted deer, hogs and other game; trading goods with Native Americans who lived near by along these waterways; some built log cabins thereabouts – such as those still standing on Lebanon Road near Dayton University; others farmed until about 1840 when railroads came into being making hunting more difficult; then farming became more common followed by manufacturing beginning with tanning hides for clothing beforebhine production moved to Toledo starting about 1870s displaced by Textile Workers Union Local 8 (TWU) locals here Among these early settlers were Myron Madden (1831-1912), John Nolen (1832-1900), James Jahnke (1797-1865), Solomon Hesseltine (1800-1867) among others significant not only because they did important work building roads, bridges and homes but also because they chose to stay put: most left after their initial settler groups grew tired or unable to make a goofy lifestyle workable outside their communities Thereafter large waves arrived over subsequent decades all seeking advantages available mainly through annexation: German residents wanted open space for their farms while Poles desired closer access to markets in Krakow so Polish Village formed in 1884 east off Lebanon Rd between Euclid Ave & Ionia Rd becoming Pittsburgh’s 5th largest community ; Italians sought easy accessnew jobs at nearby mills while Ukrainians preferred villages closer to big cities like Kharkiv/ Kiev due then lack thereof job opportunities elsewhere.; Irish entrepreneurs brought breweries & distilleries while Scotsmen developed tobacco plantations together with various families owning many slaves working long hours extracting raw materials necessary for life back then
