Forest Park is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, close to the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 20,225 as of the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in Hamilton County after Cleveland. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The park began as a series of parcels that were donated by lumber baron James Matson and his widow to be used for public recreation, including an amusement park and a golf course. The first forest was established on adjoining land at what is now Broadway and High Streets in 1892; it was enlarged in 1907 and became Forest Park Racetrack. The city acquired additional land around Forest Park Racetrack during World War I, providing much needed recreational acreage for residents and troops stationed there during World War II. The postwar years saw rapid growth for Forest Park as homes were built along High Street, Broadway Avenue, Elm Avenue, Spring Garden Road and other avenues bordering the park's boundaries; with its high-quality schools (including two Ivy League universities), hospitals (including one designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright), shopping malls (which included both world-renowned retailers such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney) and other attractions drawing people from all over town, Forest Park quickly became one of Greater Cincinnati's most popular destinations. In recent decades however, attendance at many of those attractions has been Decreasing due to changes in zoning laws within Greater Cincinnati which have limited development near certain areas while promoting more dense development elsewhere; though many new businesses have opened up since then to fill this space). The City Council adopted plans for redevelopment of parts of downtown into "Urban Village" neighborhoods which would include hundreds of residential units along side commercial corridors stretching out into Dayton Township beyond I-75/I-80 eastward across Whitehall Pike - providing much needed housing solutions for residents who had lost access to traditional single family homes throughout central Ohio following suburban developments throughout the early 21st century due largely to efforts by Mayor Nan Whaley (who had come from nearby Strongsville) - despite resistance from some important property owners within downtown who felt they were being given too little say in how their properties were being developed . On July 1st 2009 mayoral candidate Ed FitzGerald announced his candidacy for Mayor against incumbent Nan Whaley; FitzGerald pledged to increase funding for urban village projects while also increasing focus on infrastructure needs such as sidewalks/streetlights/gutters etc., especially outside core tourist areas like Terminal 5 where crime rates are highest among inner ring suburbs – something he said he would do if elected mayor
