The Forest Park Arsenal, located in Forest Park, Ohio, was formed in 1892 as a result of the consolidation of two arsenals: the Cleveland Arsenal and the Toledo Arsenal. The new armory was built on land donated by industrialist Cyrus McCormick and his wife Sarah Furniss McCormick. The first arsenal building was completed in 1895 and it served as the main armory for Forest Park until 1972. It was then used as a storage facility for weapons acquired by the city of Cleveland after it became an independent municipality. In 1976, the armory complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places and is now known as the McCormick Armory Museum. The museum has collection items from across American history including firearms, ammunition, armor piercing rounds, tools, vehicles and more. In May 2018, ammunition historian Donny Hathaway died at age 82 from a heart attack while on vacation in Hawaii. He had been researching fire arms for his book "Ammunition History."

Forest Park is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio. It is located on the Scioto River and has a population of about 9,000. The community was founded in 1816 by members of the Methodist church who acquired land from the state for a school and park. In 1928, Forest Park became part of the larger city of Cleveland. The forest that now makes up most of Forest Park was first purchased by settlers in 1786. At that time, it was an area with dense trees, making it ideal for hunting and fishing. The land gradually been developed into what we see today as patches of homes and businesses surrounded by tall trees. One such business, Aiken & Sons grocery store, still stands to this day on Monroe Street just east of State Route 611 (Uncle Tom's Road). In 1816, two men named James Kapp and Nicholas Haggerty purchased 5 acres near what is now Forest Park for $10 per acre. This would constituting one-seventh of all the land in Cleveland at that time! Over time, many others bought parcels within or adjacent to Forest Park including Samuel Morse who donated 1/4 mile (0.8 km) north along Unitarian Road from his house back to the town site in 1832; Augustus Woodward donating 1/2 mile (1 km) northeast on Euclid Avenue from his home to become part of Forest Park; John Witherspoonacreating 3/4 mile (1 km) northwest from his home on Zoeller Avenue to become part of Forest Park; Jonas Salkdonating 2 1/2 miles (3 km) southeast from where he lived off Canfield Lane in Akron to become part of Forest Park; and other landowners until there were over 100 acres (39 hectares) encompassing much today’s forested area! During later years some residents began moving out closer to Cleveland while others built up their homes around their farmssteads within sight or soundof downtown Cleveland! However, even long after residents had abandoned their farmspace close enough so they could walk into downtown every day (!), much remains visible only by horseback or carriages when exploring or visiting older parts or neighborhoods inside city limits! This large tract which included present-day ForrestPark came about because General David Dixon decided he needed more open space westward beyond Sharon Fields – what later became Midtown Cleveland – so he ordered surveys done in 1796 which produced 2 tracts totaling 10 rods each which shows how much open space there then was westward beyond Sharon Fields!! One surveyor claimed “the whole tract lay between Shaker Heights [now Center City] eastward unto Spring Hill [Cleveland], viz., ten rods” but no deed exists verifying this claim!! He did however mention another tract called East Lake View lying “ southwestward three miles towards Westlake Village” but again no deed exists verifying this claim either!!!! So it seems like Dixon may have simply meant an expanded Sharon Fields estate instead…….. although if you search through online databases like Google Earth today you can find aerial photos taken during Nixon's presidency dating back to 1974 showing vast improvements having been made across many neighborhoods west side!!! So maybe Dixon actually surveyed both tracts…..either way it's clear we possess deeds & maps referencing these properties yet none exist 😥 But regardless…………….we do know folks living east & west OF those boundaries sold piece(s) thereof back TO THE CITY OF CLEVELAND !! 😀

Forest Park is a census-designated place in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,817 at the 2010 census. It includes the town of Forest Park proper and parts of the towns of Clinton and Ambler. The community was founded in 1892 by John H. Gorman and his wife Anna Belle Gorman as a small farmstead near present-day Ambler village. The original name was "Lakewood." A post office called Forest Park was established in 1893, and remained in operation until 1902. In 1904 the name change to its current spelling, Forest Park, when a new post office building was erected on the same site. The community has since grown rapidly due to its location close to major highways and its easy access to education and shopping options. Forest Park is located at (41.385674), about east of downtown Cleveland on Highways 624 and 132nd Street between State Road 2 ( perpendicular to I-71) and Maple Grove Road/Route 131 ( concurrent with SR 131). It straddles both banks of Cuyahoga River, facing upstream from it on land that once belonged to the village of Lakewood; but now part of the city limits of Cleveland . According to the 2000 census, Forest Park had a total population of 4,951 people living in 1,491 households out of which 3,611 were lived in town proper (excluding Ambler), 1 were living elsewhere withinLucas County, 5 were dead or apart from home by suicide or other causes*, 9 were registered as unoccupied dwellings*, 814 resided vacant* (*This number does not include those who have moved away since 1990). Of these residences only 407 are still occupied; all but one being owner-occupied* (*Most residents have been displaced over time because they no longer can afford their property’s monthly mortgage payments).
Fortnightly Meeting of the Ohio Antiquarian Society was held at the United States Capitol in Philadelphia on Saturday, May 15th, 1853. The society was organized as an offshoot of the American Philosophical Society and had its first meeting on February 22nd, 1852. At this meeting, James Harned became president and Dr. Ezekiel Emerson secretary.
