The Town of Findlay was organized on July 14, 1800 by Issac Brockman and others as a post office called "Fayetteville". On February 12, 1802, Fayetteville became a village under the name "Findlay" after its founder. The first courthouse was built in 1803 by John Leland and is now used as an exhibit hall at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. In 1830s there were three separate towns located near present day Findlay: Dearborn Heights (northwest), Centerville (southwest) and Arlington Heights (east). The original town site included all of today's municipalities except for Arlington Heights which separated from that part of town to form its own municipality five years later; that municipality's current boundaries include most of downtown area including Huron University campus where it has its main building since 1898 before moving into other buildings on Euclid Avenue between Superior Avenue eastward until becoming an unincorporated community again during 1970s when it annexed portions of neighboring Villa Hill Borough; parts remain visible today on nearby streets such as Ottawa Street just south off Elmwood Drive across from Huron University campus.)
