Findlay is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 2013. Findlay is one of the most populous towns in Ohio and has been growing for over 100 years. The first settler in the area now known as Findlay was George Hillyer who arrived in 1814. He named his farm "Hillsboro." Other early settlers included John Frye, Daniel Smith and others who came around 1820-25. In 1830, James Catlett bought from Hillyer three tracts of land totaling . He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of State Route 224 and Centre Street. On September 25, 1830, Catlett granted to his nephew Nathaniel Catlett five acres (2 hectares) on what is now Main Street between High School and Elmwood Cemetery. This property provided ample space for future growth as it was then only 1/4 mile wide by 2 miles long at its widest point. In 1836 when Ohio became a state, Findlay had just 1 store and 4 residences; however by 1840 it had 12 stores and 60 residences with an estimated population of 350 people ! By 1850 there were 20 churches with over 500 members !!! The rapid growth of Findlay can be credited to many factors including: 1) transportation improvements made during the 1840s which allowed more people to move into the area; 2) construction of Ulysses S Grant's presidential library on Main Street in 1860; 3) increased industrialization that led to new jobs opportunities for residents; 4) religious conversion throughout central Ohio during this time which led to increased church attendance; 5) annexation by Akron in 1907 which created new neighborhoods within town limits
