The first commercial business built in what is now downtown Findlay was a millinery shop run by Philadelphia woman Mrs. Alexander Milne about 1829-30. Another early business venture was a blacksmith shop operated by David Gough about 1830-31; this operation later became known as Gough's grocery store. The first school was organized here in 1834 with eight students taught by Mr. Dodgey; however these classes did not meet regularly because of disputes among settlers over land ownership rights and financial obligations to local officials In 1800 Joseph Sellers settled near present day Union Station on land that he had purchased from Shawnee Indians under an agreement dating back to 1795 which allowed white settlers access to Indian lands east of Miami Township while they resided within their own township boundaries. According to one source Sellers may have also acquired additional land west of Union Station including parts of today's Findlay Township through purchase or gift from various Native American leaders . A second settler named Amos Wickham arrived about 1800 – maybe earlier – following his family’s migration from England . Wickham’s farmstead grew up around what is now Elmira Road outside town limits . By 1815 Wickham had two stores open: one north of Main Street on his property called “the old store” (now part of Canal Winchester Center) and another across Main Street from where he lived next door called “the new store” (now part of Canal Winchester Shopping Center). On July 4th 1800 Wickham donated all his property southward along Elmira Road past Canal Winchester Shopping Center To President George Washington as presents for his 1000 acres grant that year A large group consisting mostly white men who had recently become interested in settling near Toledo decided to form into a company called "Lafayette Post" led by Captain Lewis Cassius Clay who arrived hereabouts November 1789 after leaving Kentucky via Buffalo Gap under cover of darkness with three hundred hardy men under Captains Pryor, Caldwell & Sheets We went downriver& passed through Clays Creek bottomland where we found several French settlements - estimated at thirteen Hundred persons - seven having pinnaces & four armed boat houses - having trade goods with France but no English language useable thereabout Forward we advanced without meeting any opposition& came so close unto French fortifications as we could see them throgh their fields but they repassed us without firinga very proper behavior considering our great inexperience I believe
