Gun sights are a type of sighting device used on firearms to give the user a cross-section of the target in front of the firearm, making it easier and faster to hit. There are several different types of gun sights and they come in many shapes and sizes. The most common type is a red dot sight, which consists of an optic lens and reticle that is adjustable for both brightness and magnification. Other popular types include reflex sights, where the user rotates the barrel to adjust how close they must be to the target in order to fire; tritium Night Sight (TNS) devices which use lasers or light sources instead of optics; and holographic sights, which feature moving images etched onto a surface that can be seen from all around the shooter's location. The first guns with regular iron sights were built by pioneer Americans such as Captain Samuel Colt in 1836. At first these were simple red dot sights with just four dots above each eye, but over time more complex designs became available including Weaverian lenses (a type of telescope designed specifically for using handguns), Barlowe Prism sight systems (named after Philadelphia attorney Charles H. Barlow), Bushnell duplex irons (two lines intersecting at right angles so that when looking through them you can see two targets at once), Singer mounts (mounted like an eyepiece on top of a rifle barrel), Heckler & Koch HK 725 telescopic riflescopes, Zenith telescopes mounted on pivotable turrets called "telescopic converters" (), Savoy riflescopes featuring multiple objectives within radius limits set by knobs on their bases (), and various other kinds of iron sighting devices still being developed today. By 1865, about 95 percentof all American weapons had standard iron sights made by various companies including Savage Arms Company, Steyr Mannlicher Rifle Company, Stevens International Inc., Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Browning Arsenal Corporation etc., making them nearly universal across most armies. When World War I started there was significant demand for new machineguns due to advances in artillery technology such as trench warfare and gas warfare which required accurate aiming at long ranges over large areas with limited visibility; this led to development of modern precision weapon design including periscopes/telescopes/magnification devices known as "gunsight improvements". After World War I many companies stopped making iron sights altogether because too much competition from competitors made manufacturing costs prohibitively high; however some formed partnerships such as Krupps AG with Ebel & Kapp demountables company producing spotting scopes under license until 1938 when Krupps shut down completely leaving Ebel & Kapp alone producing spotting scopes commercially again until 1984. During World War II production resumed briefly for USMC Higgins Gunsight Co., Inc., who produced illuminated sniper scope versions known as Mad Dog Scopes until discontinued in 1957

In Findlay, Ohio, the first handguns were patented in 1836. The pistols were called "Folding Arms." They were a crude design and did not fire very well. However, they were used as makeshift guns by farmers. In 1840, a man named Nicholas J. Clapp made the first truly accurate handgun in Findlay by making an Improved Folding Arms Pistol. This pistol fired cartridges with tight groupings and was able to kill small game with ease. In 1845, a man named John W. Nichols developed the Nichols Patent Rifle which became one of the most popular firearms in America for its Accuracy and Durability.

With muzzleloaders becoming more common in the late 1800s, gun sights began becoming less important as secondary weapons became more prevalent in infantry units. However, they continued to be used in artillery and naval warfare through the rest of the 19th century, until they were finally replaced by automatic firearms in 1903. During World War I, gun sights were again used extensively due to their importance in trench warfare. However, they eventually fell out of favor because automatic rifles had become more reliable and easier to use than hand guns. Repeating Laser technology later replaced manual rifles as the primary weapon type in most armies throughout the 21st century, making gun sighting systems even more important for proper firing accuracy and survivability on battlefields around the world!
The origin of the modern gun sight is a mystery. There are many theories, but no definitive proof exists.
