The town's location close to major transportation arteries made it an attractive place for early industry; By 1850, Findlay boasted a flour millinery, tannery, shipbuilding yards, lumberyards and saddlery businesses. The town also became known for its manufacturing products such as cigars and boots (boots being especially popular due to their tough construction). In 1867, steamboats started Arriving from Toledo carrying passengers and cargo upriver to Dayton; this increased traffic and business in Findlay so much that trustees decided to build a wharf on the Scioto River opposite what is now First Baptist Church in order to handleloading vessels. This led to heavy development around Wharf Square until 1875 whencontainerization arrived with shipping lines like Liverpool Bay Line coming through Dayton instead In 1907-08 foundry magnate Gustavus Wulf bought out Alfred Frisbie & Sons who ran one of Dayton's most important shoe factories before moving production back east into his original factory building at Sixth Street/Wright Road in 1911-12 In 1925 Wulf sold his interest in Frisbie & Sons but kept his name associated with Dayton until his death 4 years later In 1938 local businessman Sam Harkness purchased Frisbie & Sons assets including property at 6th/Wright Rd., moved production back into old factory buildings there until finally closing operations in 1945 According To History Channel’s “Museum Of Science And Industry” both these factories were closed down because their use no longer met government standards for air quality or fire safety Sam Harkness is buried within Community College District No 1 Cemetery near where he first opened shop Findlay enjoyed steady growth throughout its history thanks primarily to its access to transportation opportunities; by 1850 it boasted both a flour millinery and tannery businesses as well as several shipbuilding yards along with lumberyards that built drawer cabinets, staircases etc... progress was stalled after World War I when lackadaisical management led many companies within Findlay's industrial sector straight into bankruptcy - this belt-tightening occurred even though prices for raw materials remained high due largely to wartime inflation .
