Findlay is a small town in the northeast Ohio region of the United States. The population was 24,879 at the 2010 census, making it the largest community in Findlay and Marion County. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Findlay was first settled by English colonists in 1698. In 1792, settlers from Pennsylvania arrived and began trading with Indians on the Scioto River. By 1812, there were about 100 people living in what is now Findlay. In 1813, John Crampton patented land southeast of present-day Findlay to include much of what is now Marion and Findlay counties. This grant made possible a large influx of new settlers into northeastern Ohio during that era. By 1824, all of southwestern Ross County had been annexed to this new county; however, because many residents wanted to remain located within their original township or village boundaries, only a few hundred citizens voted to join this new county. In 1827–28, James Ketchum surveyed and laid out a townsite for what would become Findlay on land granted him by George Washington as part of his Treaty with the Shawnees (see Treaty of Fort Wayne). The first post office was established in this town on November 1, 1830; but due to its location near Youngstown (then called Bradford) – which had also just become a major city – findlay never grew very large beyond its early years as a rural outpost until after 1840 when railroads reached nearby Warren and Youngstown and started transporting goods northward from those cities across three forks of the Mahoning River – central Ohio became known as “the Great Lakes Region” thanks largely to these transportation advances. During the 1850s through 1860s more than 2200 residents came here from Kentucky via riverboats running downriver each year; some who landed at Ashtabula Landing on Cleveland's Lake Erie shoreline took up farming while others went into business such as soapstone carving or glass blowing before moving downstream again another couple miles each time they got word there were openings for farmers along various riverside settlements across central Ohio where they could clear forests and start cultivating fields….. Many notable men who enriched our commonwealth during this time including Judge David Dudley Brownell who helped found Our Lady Of Mount Carmel convent school…Many prominent citizens including Governor Abel Pomeroy whose Mansion still stands today and Captain Garrett Akins signed ordinance creating Stark Township January 4th 1865 following an election contest held that day between two delegates from Columbiana County…. Plainfield Township was created adjacent to Stark Township on October 15th 1870 by Order Of The President Ulysses S Grant……” All told more than 10 different townships were organized throughout southeastern Lucas County prior to 1870 when most likely one resulted from combining two earlier ones…. Census reports list 54 separate families residing in township boundaries as late as 1880….. Today remnants of several pioneer settler communities can be found scattered around downtown Dayton (formerly German Village), adjacent portions northwest Columbus/Middletown along I-675 & US 12 corridor & parts adjoining Akron proper including Colerain Center & Bellefontaine Park…. However other than a handfulBanner Heights [a western suburb] has seen continuous residential development since 1970 while developing outside town limits….. One cannot help but wonder if some degree or formof government control over these developments might not have been beneficial long term given current demographic trends? In 1920 Indianola Township also became extinct when it merged with neighboring Newton Township into Franklin County………… so too did Newarkville which borders both Newton Township & Indianola Township…… Most recently Mound City annexed back into Republic June 6th 2017………… On July 20th 2018 Hamilton Forge annexation request was accepted………….. annexation brings total number annexation requests approved in Orange County over ten years past…………………………………… So far this century we have seen: 22 annexations requests accepted versus 172 applications denied………… Frontenac Island lost its name back in 2006 when it received an email notification from Toledo asking if it wanted to become “Hudson’s Beach”…………………… While agriculture remains primary industry here todaysteady job growth has led MainStreet Media Ventures LLC[a local digital media company]to open their doors almost 5 years ago providing online content marketing services for businesses owners plus event production support for events ranging from funerals to weddings….. In addition Benjy Platt[owner/operator], Jeffery Lassiter[director], Ryan Hechtman[director]and Chad Kappauer[manager]are among recent hires adding even more valuephony artistry + production expertise respectively……………………nowinexisting businesses are: Denny's Steakhouse(Formerly Joes Dave's), Goodyear Tire Center(Formerly Goodyear tire store), La Quinta Inn( Formerly Days Inn), Palace Theatre(Formerly Playhouse Casino)and Horseshoe Casino.( formerly Starlite Casino)[note: casino closed Dec 2014]. Previously Foundry Bar& Grill served primarily beer until May 2016 when they transitioned towards food service…………………… [ note: restaurant reopened November 3rd2017.] Also locally owned Chesapeake Bay Grille offers delicious seafood items starting at $9 per meal………Most people hereabouts would say things haven't really changed all that much since they first populated this area over 100 YEARS AGO!
