It seems that the divergence between these two types of human happened because when some ancestral members of humanity transitioned from being bipedal to becoming fully plantigrade (i.e., adopting an upright posture), their descendants found themselves at a disadvantage in terms of competition for resources and space with larger animals (Langston et al., 2007).
