Findlay, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Findlay County. The population was plus or minus 14,593 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Ohio by population. It is located on the Ottawa River and has a population density of just over one person per square mile (0.6 people per square kilometer). The first European settlers in what is now Findlay were French Canadians who arrived during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1857. They named their new town after George Findlay, an official with the railway company. At that time there were only eight families living in what is now Findlay Township: four men, two women, and two children from Quebec City, three men from Canada east of Lake Erie, and one man from Iroquois Village on the Ottawa River. French Canadian culture was dominant until about 1900 when English became predominant due to waves of immigration from southeastern England and Scotland which began around 1830s as land prices increased for agricultural production near Lakes Erie and Ontario. By 1870 most residents had either English or Scottish heritage; some Irish immigrants also settled here during this time period but they left after 1850 when American railroads became available to them across Canada instead of going through Dublin or Belfast en route to America. In 1887–88 James Waring built Waring Dam on Canfield Creek in present-day Union Township; this flood control project increased water levels on the river so that mills could be built upstream along canals linked to Detroit via those same waterwayside channels used by early canal builders such as Nicholas Renwick for trade purposes between Upper Michigan and downriver Toledo (the "Great Lakes"). With these new developments came heavy demand for labor needed to build these projects—one reason why many farmers turned out to be major investors in both local mills and railroad companies throughout much of Midwestern United States during this period. In 1893 John Boddicker purchased 2,000 acres (8 hectares) north of townsite from David Weir for $25 an acre ($2/meter²). This property would become known as "Boddicker Park". From here he started planting corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and other crops which would support his family until 1930 when he sold his farm to Armour Rubber Co.; subsequent owners included Jens Ostergaard (1951), Karel Poulsen (1961), Ole Olsen Sr., Ole Olsen Jr., Einar Christensen (1981), Lars Høiland (1991) and current owner Lars Høiland Enterprises Inc.. After World War II many members of management teams at Armour Rubber Co., including president Harry Hardesty retired followed by vice president Noel Wehner who served until 1980 when position was taken over by current president Lars Høilandenstein Many small businesses closed after World War II because there wasn't enough slack jobs available due to technological advances such as jet travel becoming available; however a few large businesses did survive such as Checkerd & Sons Dry Goods Store which remained open until it went out of business in 1990 Atomic Energy Commission facility The Federal Radio Corporation Building opened its doors on November 1st 1946 with President Franklin D Roosevelt hosting a special ribbon cutting ceremony
