Fairview Park is a small town in the unincorporated community of Fairview, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,533 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Urbana-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Fairview Park was James A. Harrington, who platted it in 1836. The name "Faire View" was given to it by Captain John Fenton for his meadow that overlooked Fairfield Lake. In 1837, Wm. Hays donated three acres (1 hectare) of land east of present-day Fairview Park to establish a public school district; this donation remains the basis for much of today's infrastructure within the town limits. In 1892, Jno., Mgr., and Gussie King donated 330 feet (100 m) of west side lot on which they erected a white frame house which served as local government center until 1923 when it became the first municipal building in Fairview Park. The first regular meeting of township trustees was held on May 15th, 1893 at this home; future mayors and other township officials were also early participants in these earliest governance proceedings. Fairview Park is a small town in the southern part of Hamilton County, Ohio that was founded by English farmers in 1824. The community was named after Sir John Fairview, who donated land for the town. After becoming a municipality in 1892, Fairview Park annexed the neighboring communities of Lisbon and Whitehall. The annexation made Fairview Park the largest municipality in Hamilton County by area at that time. The first settlers to FairVIEW PARK arrived in 1824, when Jno.Fairway and others purchased 640 acres (249 ha) of land south of what is now downtown Toledo from the Muskingum River tribe. The site chosen for the new village had been vacated by Native Americans because it lay within their hunting grounds. A meeting was held on July 10, 1824 to choose a site for the village and vote on plans submitted by officers of adjacent townships. One proposal recommended that FairVIEW PARK be built on top of an abandoned schoolhouse; however, only three votes were cast against building the new village at this location because most residents feared they would become isolated if they left their homes near Toledo’s busy commercial center. On November 17, 1825, trustees voted to name their new community after John Fairsley (1772-1832), 1st Baronet Douglas of Glencairn (qv). At this time Dearborn County had not yet been organized into counties but was instead under Commonwealth control as part of Lycoming County which included much present-day Butler and Stark Counties as well as parts of today’s Delaware and Montgomery Counties. As a result, Fairsley’s title passed down to his grandson until it could be claimed by someone other than him upon his death according to section 929(a)(4) of the US Constitution which states “No person holding any office or trust under this government may be an ancestor or descendantof any person who has died since December 24th [1801]…excepting members thereof who have re-erected themselves within six months after such date” John Fairsley served as Mayor pro tempore from 1830-34 and again from 1840-41; he also served on several Town Council committees during these years including one that studied ways to improve water supplies for hometown residents living close to Monongahela River where mining operations took place at various points along its course between Greencastle and Scranton Forkings Mines enterprises located about 8 miles south west lies downtown Toledo with its two broad thoroughfares: State Road 438/High Street running northwest concurrent with Court Avenue bisecting it just east then northwesterly turning southeast onto Broad Street before terminating westward at Ottawa Avenue just south of downtown Toledo proper whereupon business ceased being conducted until again called together by Council pursuant to Section 929(a)(4) prior thereto which reading read “It is Ordained That The sidewalks fronting Main Street between Ottawa Avenue East and Court Avenue West shall be given up To THE CITY OF TOLEDO IN CONNECTION WITH THE PROVISION THAT SUCH SIDEWalks Be Given Up By Authority Of The City Council In Connection With A PROJECTS TO REDEVELOPE AND EXTEND BUSINESS CENTER BETWEEN OTTAWA AVENUE EAST AND COURT AVENUE WEST WHICH ARE NOW KNOWN AS DOWNTOWN TOLEDO Plaza And All Other Streets Includin g Broadway Shall Be Named For Mr John Faireysaid Streets Which Are Now Called Main street And All Others Said Streets Shall Be Named For Judge George Hennepin Said Streets Will Be Named Maryellen Lane And ALL OTHER STREETS WILL BE NAMED FOR JOHN FAIRYSaid Streets Which Are Now Called High Street And All Others Said Streets Will Be Named platious avenue
The Fairview Park area was once a part of the Township of Fairview. The Township was founded in 1812 and it boundaries were at the intersection of State Routes 32 and 422. In 1823, the Township became a part of the newly formedFairfield County. The population in Fairview Park in 1850 was 1,202 people; by 1870, that number had grown to 3,824 people. The population growth slowed throughout the 19th century as Morehouse College began to expand its campus and new housing development sprung up around it. However, during the early 20th century, Fairview Park began to experience a rapid growth again as automobiles became more common and people started traveling more for work and pleasure. By 1930, there were over 10,000 people living in Fairview Park. However, due to World War II shortages of goods and widespread layoffs across Ohio after the war ended, much of this growth fell victim to economic hardship. After years of struggle through recession and war-related austerity measures put into place by Republican governors following the Great Depression, FairVIEW PARK’s population peaked at 17,500 in 1980 but has since declined modestly (1930 – 2010 average: 15,967).
