Fairborn is a city in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. The name "Fairborn" is also used for the town of Fairfield and other nearby towns. The initial settlement in what would become Fairborn was made up of families who had emigrated from England in 1814. The first post office was established in 1818, and by 1830 there were thirteen residents living in Fairborn Township. In 1837 land was acquired by John Couch and his wife Catharine Couch from the widow Jane Wickhams for $2,000; they named their new town after her mother-in-law, Katherine Cochrane (1775–1836). In 1838 a two-story school House was built on Elm Street west of Market Street to serve as a public schoolhouse until it burned down in 1865; damage done by a tornado that year caused it to be rebuilt with larger dimensions and an open roof. In 1870 the township became part of Lucas County when that state was created from parts of Ohio and Indiana. In 1915 Fairborn received its current name from James Krieger Sr., Mayor of Cleveland at the time who said "fair means good." From then until 1970 all local government services were provided by Muskegon Heights Township which amalgamated with Cleveland into one municipality. On July 1, 1970, Fairborn lost its status as an unincorporated community within Lucas County when it merged into Cleveland proper along with Muskegon Heights Township

The city of Fairborn, Ohio was founded in 1814 by families of British descent. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. It became the capital of what is now Northwest Ohio in 1827 and served as such until 1840. During this time, Fairborn attracted many wealthy Americans to its thriving business community. In 1851, the city seceded from the United States and became an independent republic known as the Republic of Fairborn. The city remaining an important commercial center until it lost its status in 1990 when it merged with neighboring Cleveland to form Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. Fairborn’s history can be traced back to early 1800s when English settlers first arrived in what is now Northwest Ohio. One family, the Stewarts, ran a prosperous farm near present-day Fairborn for several generations. Among their descendants were several key players in early Brownsville Township development including Capt John Stewart who played an instrumental role in helping found that township in 1795; Judge James Jinks (1790-1862) who served as justice of peace for parts of southwestern Wayne County before becoming a judge at Lawndale County; Colonel George Halleck (1810-1872), one of America’s leading fur traders during the late 19th century;and Major Ephraim Morse (1800-1868). During the mid 1800s, some farmers began moving into what is now Akron to escape growing taxes on their crops brought on by slavery run plantations deep southwest into Michigan Territory. They followed Indian trails eastward through present day Holmesburg and downriver to reach modern day Akron where they set up shopishing businesses or bought land subdivided into tracts for farming purposes drawn mainly from areas lying around Summit Hill outside downtown Akron proper – today’s University Heights neighborhood northwest of I-75 exit 283A/Merrill Road/Ohio State Route 822E/Parker Road north side and south side boundaries respectively bounded on each side by First Street east [now Boulevard], Third Street west [now Highway 21] and Second Street south [now South High School property]. From these beginnings there developed a strong connection between Akron natives and those living elsewhere within what would become Northeast Ohio more generally known as “the Great Lakes Region” because so much commerce took place along Lake Erie and Superiorthaland near Detroit Michigan while products exported all over North America passed through those ports onto smaller waterways crossing central Pennsylvania via Clearfield Ferry Landing then continuing southeastward past Erie Canal Lock #5 just prior to reaching Canandaigua Falls which formed Niagara River entering Ontario Province Canada about Onondaga Lake surrounded by lacrosse fields built primarily by immigrants from New York City Irish Catholics workingclass Protestants poor Germans Swiss religious refugees fleeing war torn Europe arriving wet behind closed eyes seeking safety oasis amidst great turmoil opportunities abound open mind prevail hard work pay off resulting today’s highly competitive business climate
Fairborn was founded in 1795 by the General Assembly of the United States as a town on the north bank of the Scioto River. The original population of Fairborn numbered only about 100 people. By 1800, the town had increased to over 2,000 people and by 1810 it had reached 4,000 people. In 1814, Fairborn became a city under the control of Ohio Territory. The city limits were enlarged in 1835 and again in 1840. On July 11, 1850, Fairborn incorporated as a village with a population of just over 400 people. The village ceased to exist on December 12, 1870 when it merged with neighbouring townships to form the current township of Fairborn.
