In 1883, Mr. & Mrs. Hockaday erected what is now known as the "Hockaday's Pavilion" on Cemetery Road in Fairborn. This structure was designed as an assembly ground for local farmers and their animals around which they could shoot off targets at distances up to 50 yards (45 meters). The first national championship match held at this ground took place on November 3, 1883 between George Washington and John Browning. After months of practice by participants and referees, this event became one of the most prestigious competitions in rifle sports history. To date, more than 150 tournaments have been hosted at this venue, resulting in over $1 million in prize money awarded to participants! In 1945, following Japan's surrender, Fairborn became home to Operation Crossroads – the largest peacetime military exercise ever conducted in North America – which saw thousands of people influx into town to participate in what was then considered a "grand experiment". The following year saw significant growth when new Interstate 71 were constructed adjacent to downtown; this freeway quickly replaced older roads as Fairborn's main transportation artery. Since then, much progress has been made to expand infrastructure and improve access to education and jobs within Downtown Fairbirth while preserving some key cultural attractions such as its landmark buildings dating back to 1814 (the first school building) or its annual Oktoberfest celebration (held every October).

John Fairey was born in Fairburn Township in 1794 and died in 1867 at the age of 87 years.Fairey was one of Ohio's most prominent landowners and entrepreneurs during the early 19th century. Heowned large tracts of land throughout Ohio including parts of Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Independence (now Warren), Medina (now Geauga), Portage (now Muskegon Heights), Defiance (now Waterford Township), Athens (now Aurora)and more than two dozen other townships and villages totaling over 20 square miles in area at various times during his career as a farmer and businessman. Fairey also served as treasurer of Bloomfield Township from 1823-1827 and trustee of Columbiana Township from 1827-1830; he also served on various boards or committees responsible for public works within his endorsed wards including those overseeing education, roads/bridges/canals etc., among others Fairey's contributions to township life were both significant AND unique - he remainedactively involved until his death many years after retirement from active involvement with township government himself! His legacy is still felt today through continued support for local schools & programs even after so many years passed since his passing; truly an exampleof why Community Service should be at the topofthe agenda when contemplatingelecting officials!
