Fairborn is a town in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Fairborn is located on the border of Holmes and Summit Counties. The first European settlers in what is now Fairborn were French traders who arrived in 1795 and named it "Villefranche". In 1801, John Fairburn purchased land from the Ottawa Indians and renamed it after himself,Fairborn Township. A post office was established at Fairborn in 1806, and remained in operation until 1880. In 1890, an act of Congress created Stark County and divided Holmes County into two parts; one including Fairborn Township became Stark County while the other included much of what are now Holmes and Summit Counties became Lucas County. The townships within Lucas County were to be organized into districts with staggered voting populations until 1915 when all but one (Franklin) were added to Medina Township which had been formed from part of Summit County. However, Franklin continued to be unorganized until 1920 when it finally received its own government under a direct vote by the township voters. One major event that took place during this time period was the erection of a new courthouse complex by local contractor George Harkins for $1 million dollars on August 10th 1923 just outside town limits. This building served as both primary courthouse for townspeople throughout most of their history before being replaced by present day county Courthouse which opened in 1970 On December 3rd 1941 during World War II there was significant damage done to Main Street near where today's Old National Bank Building stands resulting in extensive reconstruction that lasted over five years costing $27 million dollars . Today Main Street borders newly built Interstate 471 south while still remaining business district between downtowns Frankfort and Dayton
