Fairborn is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 31,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Fairborn were French traders and missionaries in 1795. In 1813, General David Hunter burned down a trading post here while on an expedition against the Shawnee Indians. The site was platted as Fairborn by Alexander Fairbanks in 1814; it became a town in 1827 when it was annexed by Cleveland. In 1830, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America at Fairborn Arsenal; he brought his engine overland to Mansfield (now Dayton) for testing before its introduction into service on April 12, 1830. The tracks leading to and from Mansfield were laid trackage through what is now Fairborn before being extended to Woodward Avenue east of town in 1836 and then north to Euclid Avenue west of town in 1840-41 as part of the Northern Pacific Railroad's construction program connecting Lake Erie with Chicago via Cincinnati and Milwaukee respectively. Franklin Dixie Railway acquired NP stock during their acquisition process on November 1, 1901; this made NP one of only three railroad companies (the others being CSX Transportation and UP Railroad) that did not become public companies after they merged with Conrail on May 6, 1996. As part of their effort to improve interlocking signals between their lines throughout Conrail's system, CN purchased eight Siemens AG 5K6 automatic coupler switches from US Railways Corporation (USR) for $191 million on October 9, 2005 – thus becoming the first railroad company ever to purchase such equipment from a private manufacturer outside of North American rolling stock manufacturers such as Alstom SA or GE Aviation Co., Inc.. These switches are used primarily within CN's main line network today but also operate some branch lines which utilize them where necessary due to lack thereof elsewhere on Conrail’s system.. Despite these new capabilities however, many problems continue to plague CN: most notably delays caused by incorrect installation/operation of switch mechanisms; faulty wiring within signallingpackages leading back into main Line Network control centers across Canada; increased usage & wear & tear due to intense traffic along both mainline corridors since inception...these have ledCN trustees[to] recommend[ing] that all future purchases be made through Governmental entities like National Railway Equipment Corporation or Bombardier Incorporated rather than through private manufacturershops because NTN has shown itself unable or unwilling(at least so far...)to provide satisfactory solutions despite multiple requests by NGEC deliberations...Even though these issues remain unresolved NTN still maintainthatthey havethis capabilitytoworkaroundondifferentproblemsandarecontinuingtotheProvisionsofthe Law.) In 1810, the area of Fairborn was named in honor of General James H. Fairborn, who had commanded American forces during the War of 1812. The town began to grow rapidly after a canal was built through the area and new businesses were opened. In 1836, Fairborn became a village and in 1841 it became a city. Today, Fairborn is an important community located inFairfield County, Ohio. The first permanent settler in what would become Fairborn was John Cockerill, who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on the east side of the Scioto River and called his land "Cockerill's Grove." Cockerill's farmstead still stands today and is open to visitors. Other early settlers included Gideon Welles (1801-1850), Isaac Jewett (1802-1872), Jabez Weed (1805-1875), Nicholas Bickford (c1798), Ebenezer Mayson (1800-1853) and Solomon French (1800-1868). The city of Fairborn was founded on July 7, 1836 by vote of the citizens of Fairfield County. At that time, it consisted only of a few wooden buildings near the center of town. The first mayor was Jeremiah Dixon; he served for one year until he was replaced by George Witherspoon. A sawmill on Saginaw Street owned by Ezekiel Gentry started operating around this time and produced lumber for local homes and businesses as well as being used to build public buildings like county courthouse and jail. Growth continued to be rapid during this time as businesses opened up throughout town including groceries/supplies store operated by Fenton & Company; blacksmith shop operated by Jackson & Company; hotel which later became known as the Masonic Temple; carriage factory run by Brown Brothers; Insolent Authors' Society established with meeting rooms at various locations within town limits; trustees for school district were appointed: four men - Abraham J gunsinger president, Levi Goodwin treasurer/accountant, Amos coming vice president/treasurer, Obadiah Morse justice commissioner Some notable events from this period include when Mayor Dixon resigned due to illness;; when riots occurred between abolitionists and proslavery activists.; when voters chose not to renew Mayor Dixon's term.; fairgrounds were dedicated Viewpoint Parkground (); bricklayer Ezra Stalker laid out streetscape (); business properties annexed into newly formed School District No 1 (). On November 6th 1860 City Council voted 3-2 in favor of annexing all property northward along Scioto Avenue from State Road 9 westward 2 blocks so that development could begin thereupon.: This annexation created much controversy as many residents felt their neighborhoods had been taken away without their consent (& they had no right to do so because their property hadn't changed hands). It wasn't until 1862 that developers finally got permits from City Hall allowing them to start building on parcels adjacent to existing homes.: Two years later another vote resulted in annexing all properties southward along state road 9 from Canal Road eastward 2 blocks so that development could begin thereupon., again creating much controversy because many residents felt their neighborhoods had been taken away without their consent (& they still didn't have power over those areas since they hadn't changed hands)). But eventually these boundaries were set aside once more when zoning changes allowed for bigger tracts of land available nearer downtown.) As redevelopment proceeded apace additional housing developments arose such as Town House Place (), Cable Street (). In 1865 two schools were established: one elementary school serving students grades kindergarten through eighth grade while another high school followed soon afterwards., both schools remain operational today.- In 1903 Municipal Court Judge John Ladd ruled that municipal elections should be held every 5 years instead of every 2 years which led to further growth within Municipal Court Department.). On December 20th 1915 fire destroyed most or allofthe original downtown core including commercial buildings,, libraries,, churches,, etc., however some parts did survive including portionsofthe Masonic Temple., now home originallytothe Insolent Authors' Society
Fairs in Fairborn were held annually to celebrate the town's cultural and social events. The first fair was held on July 4, 1836. It lasted for two days and featured a variety of activities including livestock drives, arts and crafts, and food vendors. In 1846, the fairgrounds were extended to include much of what is now downtown Fairborn.
