Euclid is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,536 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. Euclid was founded on April 6, 1824 by General John Trumbull and his wife Sylvanus Thayer. The name "Euclide" comes from the Greek word ἔκλειδα (ekleidà), meaning "square." The first mention of Euclid as an English settlement was in 1788 when Benjamin Franklin and other British traders called it Euclidian Springs. On July 4, 1824, General John Trumbull named the community after himself and his wife Sylvanus Thayer. He had arrived in America with Major-General George Washington's army during the War for Independence and had been influential in developing Cleveland as a major American military center during that time period. In 1897, Cleveland voters passed an ordinance abolishing slavery within city limits. The following year saw groundbreaking for Euclid's first high school which opened on November 3rd, 1898. The nearby Whitmore Academy also opened its doors that same year to students from local homeschooling families who were refused enrollment at Cleveland's public schools due to their religious beliefs about slavery which at the time still persisted in many areas of Ohio including Euclid! In 1903, Cleveland voters passed an ordinance establishing parkland east of downtown along FirstEnergy Boulevard between Taft Avenue and Patterson Avenue as part of what would become known as Lake Erie Park District; this land would eventually be used to create Quicken Loans Arena & its associated sports complex today! In 1907-08 construction began on what would become known as Queen Elizabeth High School following a annexation by Euclid from Mentor Township; this building now houses the city hall office buildings adjacent to Secondhand Market Park across Broadview Avenue from City Hall! On November 4th of that year Mayor Abramson hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for what would become Erie County Courthouse Annex – located just north of present day State Fairgrounds off I-271 – becoming only the second courthouse annex in Ohio ! That same year saw significant growth within town with new businesses being established such as Paintshine Glass Company & Brownie's Bakery followed by Wernher Printing Press later becoming Western Electric Manufacturing Company before finally closing in 1911 due primarily to World War I Veteran homelessness; however much like many other small towns throughout Northeast Ohio through the 1920s & 1930s there continued significant economic growth (& storefront closures) until smartphones became popular among young adults!! In 1951 plans began forwarded by then Mayor James Ziegler for what would eventually become Joe Louis Arena – now owned by Quicken Loans Incorporated – fronting West Side Road just south of current day Elyria–Georgetown Heights boundary line!!! This led to years long negotiations between both cities over various site changes culminating in a $175 million dollar donation fromthen President Richard Nixon funded via bonds backed by steel production !! However even though groundbreaking took place almost 50 years ago progress towards reality has barely begun with only minor updates or expansions taking place inside/outsideJoe Louis Arena featuring little pedestrian flow or access outside!! Despite this some revitalization efforts have taken place near arena’s entrances including planting large trees along portions bordering ramps leading up into arena proper (+ recent installation of lighting + sound systems) while work continues nearby on massive variances project affecting entire southern end zone formerly occupied by Joe Louis Arena! All things considered it’s safe to say that while much has changed since those early days inside/outsideJoeLouisArena nearly all original goals remain unchanged simply awaiting future funding opportunities ???
