Euclid is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 25,815 at the 2010 census. Euclid is known for its large collection of Classical Roman architecture and for its annual Euclid Festival which attracts more than 100,000 people to downtown Cleveland each year. The name Euclid comes from an old Indian word meaning "place where two paths cross." The town was first settled in 1814 by pioneers from Indiana Territory who named their community after Greek mathematician and philosopher Euclid of Alexandria (c.270 BC–345 AD). The town had a population of just 10 people when it was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1824. That same year, Ohio General George Washington visited Euclid and recommended that the community be named after him because he felt that it would become "a center of learning". In 1836, the village changed its name to Euclid Township after receiving land from President Andrew Johnson in what is now Cleveland suburb Mentor Heights. In 1830, while living in Painesville Junction near Painesville, John Cuyahoga (1795-1868), one of America's earliest railroad promoters and treasurer general during the Second American Revolution (1809-1813) founded Cuyahoga County Railway Company with trackage south to Youngstown and east to Cleveland overland route originally built by George Rogers Clark in 1792 as part of his trail across North America
