Euclid is a city in the Miami-Dade County, Florida region of the United States. The population was 18,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Euclid's downtown district has been called "the cultural and commercial center of South Florida" and "the business and financial capital of Miami-Dade County." The first Europeans to visit what is now Euclid were French traders in 1564 when they sailed down the Ohio River Valley on their way to established trading posts along the Mississippi River. They named their new discovery after Aristotle’s Academy in Athens, Greece (now Inwood). In 1787, General George Washington journeyed through this area as part of his Corps of Discovery Survey. He found Indian trails leading from near Fort Wayne to Bartholomew’s Landing on Lake Erie. His maps showed that there must be a great river flowing through this locale because he could not find it on his own trip across America. The next year, he sent Lieutenant James Kappworth upstream with a group of soldiers to explore this potential source for water supplies for Army campaigns against Native Americans living east of Tampa Bay. Kappworth reached what is now Euclid Heights early one morning on September 5, 1787 while under cover of darkness; he named these hills “Euclid Heights” after General Washington’s headquarters at West Point upriver from where he had arisen before daybreak that morning during his survey tour across South Florida! Kappworth reported back that “a very practicable stream passed close by us without any difficulty being perceived; we accordingly constructed ourselves huts upon some low ground within easy sight thereof, having thereby procured water sufficient for our purposes all day long without drawing so much as a drop! This circumstance will doubtless occasion many people in those parts to think highly bothof our Colonel and himself & it may also tend to promote general credit with our countrymen throughout…. We are here upon an important mission which cannot be lightly neglected or spurned either by friends or enemies!” The name stuck and today's namesake – Euclid – was given its current form about 40 years ago when developers began building high-rise office buildings downtown adjacent to US 1/I-95. At first calledCentury City Plaza but renamed after developer Milton Siegel's daughter Lois – who happened to marry Dr. Leon Levy – then First Lady Pat Buchanan played hostess atrium overlooking One University Drive bearing her parents' name:Patricia Elizabeth Buchanan Albright (1922 - 2018). Downtown residents continue using 'Euclid Heights' until recently when streetcars stopped running on Third Street between State Road 710 (Veterans Boulevard) and I-5 southbound past Government Center Mall until 2020; shopping centers have replaced streetcar service making 'Euclid Heights' essentially two blocks long between Business Park Avenue east side and Military Way west side once again becoming primarily residential streetscape since then
