The target shooters tried to hit the bird's head with their cannons. The first gunnery school in Euclid was started in 1848 by Captain George Prentice and Captain John Auld. In 1860, Captain John Hargrave established the artillery school in Euclid. The school closed in 1865 because of financial reasons. In 1866, Colonel Augustus Loring organized a militia company and began offering rifle and pistol shooting programs for children in Euclid. This program continued until 1898 when it merged into the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1911, General Hugh Sweeny organized the Euclid Rifle Club which became one of the best rifle clubs in America. The club continues to meet every month today.

The range became an important training ground for American troops and it is still in use today. And yet another key figure in this history is Captain Samuel Colt himself. Colt began manufacturing handguns in 1814 and soon realized that he could also make rifles capable of firing projectiles up to 100 yards away. This new technology allowed him to create what is now known as the world's first successful mass-produced gunpowder weapon-the revolver
