Euclid is a city in and the county seat of Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 13,827 at the 2010 census. Euclid is located on the border of Lorain and Mahoning counties and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Euclid was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1793, George Washington visited Euclid while he was visiting the Western Reserve country around Cleveland. On July 5, 1814, General Andrew Jackson defeated an invading force led by Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Erie Canal Road (now University Circle) in what is now downtown Euclid. In 1828, James Kappeler erected a Monument to his father-in-law Lieut.-Governor John Calkins upon his death in that year in honor of him and other local officials who had contributed to party fusion during that term as Ohio's treasurer general. A new courthouse was built between 1840 and 1851 on State Street (now First Avenue), across from where West Side High School currently stands; this courthouse remains standing today as part of Euclid's civic center complex known as "The Square." In 1892, Congressman Charles Wickersham introduced H.R. 4471 - which became Public Law 97-521 - which provided for obligatory education for white schoolchildren living within fifty miles (80 kilometers) of a public school system; this law helped to create severe overcrowding at many urban districts which were unable or unwilling to build schools beyond their current boundaries because they relied primarily on private donors or philanthropic efforts alone to finance construction projects larger than those required by law; as a result of this problematical situation, many small towns throughout Ohio lost their municipal governments altogether after becoming effectively understate status due both to lack of resources available only through state government allocations or outright prohibition by state legislatures from providing funding absent special conditions attached thereto such as voter approval or referenda specifically authorizing such appropriations). The 8 Mile Hill neighborhood forms much of its core commercial district with several blocks extending eastward along I–beam Highway bisecting Euclid into two halves forming Northeast Hills District 1&2 while also lying just east off Valley View Boulevard making up Northwest Hills District 3rd Ward . Downtown streets running northsouth running parallel with I–beam Highway bisects Euclid into two halves forming Southeast Hills District 1&2 before terminating abruptly near Kirkland Drive northwest cornering Union Chapel Road making up Northwest Hills District 2nd Ward making up East Hills District 1st Ward . Euclid is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by George Washington and Daniel Boone as part of the Northwest Territory. Euclid became a city in 1907. The town is named for Euclid Avenue, which runs through it. The first Europeans to visit what is now Butler County were Frenchmen François Pierre Duguay de la Fayette and Nicolas-Jacques Conte during their Surveying Expedition of 1795–96. They mapped much of present-day Ohio but did not attempt to settle there because they thought the area too wild and difficult to explore. However, when General James Kipke's military expedition discovered the forks of the Maumee River in 1800, he decided to make an ill-advised attempt to cross that river at what is now Euclid while supplies were still available on the other side. This led to his disastrous campaigns against Native Americans such as the Shawnees and Miami Indians near present-day Cleveland before he finally learned his lesson and never attempted another crossing until after American independence had been achieved in 1783.} George Washington purchased land east of present day Cleveland along Canoga Creek from the Wyandots for $2 per acre (although this parcel would be patented backdated to only February 8th, 1796). He built a cabin here known as Mount Vernon Place on November 15th, 1814; it served as both his home and workplace until he died in 1832.—the original cabin has been lost but an inscription inside one of its logs still remains.) Washington's purchase also included about 260 acres (100 hectares) adjoining modern day Cleveland where he built what are today Oak Cliff and Greenville townships.—Euclid Township was organized December 7th, 1814., four days after Mount Vernon Place was platted.—The main street through centerfield where Mr & Mrs Washington married—is today Petticoat Road.—Only one building still standing from when Mr Washingtons village stood: old Presbyterian church west of current US Highway 422 between Euclid Ave & State Fair Rd
