Euclid was a city in the United States, and is today an unincorporated community located in Lucas County, Ohio. Euclid was founded by James Caldwell and other pioneers on the Scioto River in 1814. The city was named after Euclid of Alexandria, Egypt. It became a town in 1825, and became a city in 1893. In 2002, it merged with the neighbouring village of Highwood to form one municipality called Euclid-Highwood. The precursor to modern Euclid began as a small farmstead on the Scioto River near what is now the intersection of Delaware Avenue and State Route 139A (now USRoute 28). A group of five farmers from Granville Township immigrated to what is now Ohio in 1795: Johnstown area farmer Samuel Whetstone, Michael Tompkins from Lancaster County; Peter Sell from Westmoreland Township; Nicholas Goodall from Norfolk County; and David Snetterfield from Monmouthshire County. The group purchased about 640 acres (2 km²) around what is now downtown Euclid for £5 per acre ($8 per km²). They built their house at Third Street and Buckeye Road NE on present day's Union Square shopping mall site where they raised crops, hunted game, conducted trade with neighboring states and Indians, constructed roads and buildings including a mill they operated for three years before difficulties over money forced them to sell property back to their original investors. In 1814 Caldwell purchased land southeast of present day Downtown Euclid along Cedar Creek which he developed into an agricultural society known as "Caldwell's Colony." One hundred men were enrolled there when it opened its doors July 1st, 1814 under new leadership including James Caldwell himself. By 1830 this colony had grown too large for continued agricultural operations so four more families were joined by others who came eastward during that year: John McCoy (from Virginia), George Stephenson (of Westmoreland Township), Moses Brownell (of Muskingum County) and Elijah Prentiss (of Erie County). With over $6000 cash prize won at a public lottery on October 12th 1830 by member Elias Howe for his newly built steamboat "Horseshoe" - soon alluding to future railroads - these settlers established themselves as entrepreneurs within minutes of each other across numerous parcels of land west bank of the Scioto River opposite Lockport Tavern! This inaugural period also marks the origin of many important landmarks including first brick building used as school room/library down First Street NW then Second NW corner alleyGates House ballroom features may date back even further but are not currently substantiated
