Englewood is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that now makes up Englewood was first developed as a small farming community by early English settlers in the area around present-day Englewood and Greenfield Township on the southern border of Ohio. On July 16, 1788, John Monroot, one of several men who participated in founding Cincinnati from land grants given to him by George Washington as part of the Treaty of Paris after American independence was achieved, surveyed and named what would become Englewood Township. In 1802, when James Kapp bought 640 acres (249 ha) east of modern-day Englewood for $4 per acre ($140 per ha), he made it clear that his intent was not just to create a new township but also to create a "new settlement." That year saw another important milestone when General David Hunter organized an expedition led by Colonel Joshua Trimble which traveled downriver from Fort Wayne and explored the area between Greenfield Township and present day Westlake Village before returning home on October 15. This trip marked the beginning of large-scale development along the banks of the river near where Trimble's Expedition had explored just two years earlier. Kapp's original settlement included only 20 or so homes; however, within five years more than 400 families had settled in what is now known as Englewood Township proper – making it one of America’s earliest planned communities. By 1810—the year following Kapp’s death—the population had reached 1,000 residents spread over an area that stretched from today’s west side across parts of north Lucas County including portions now located in Strongsville and Hilliard Heights to present day Fairview Park across I-670/US-419 from downtown Cleveland. Englewood was founded in 1800 by Joshua Engle and his wife Deborah. Joshua had come to the United States from Great Britain, and he was the first settler in what is now Englewood. The Engles were among the earliest white people living in what is now Englewood. In 1819, they started a gristmill on East Huntingdon Street. The mill was one of the first businesses in town. In 1825, they built a sawmill on South Grove Street. The sawmill was one of the early mills in town and it continued operation until about 1930. In 1830, Jeremiah Morse bought the mill property from the Engles. He operated it as a flour mill until 1865 when he moved it to its present location on North Avenue. From 1865 until 1931, it was known as Morse Mill & Elevator Company Ltd..
