Englewood is a city in and the county seat of Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Springfield metropolitan area. The name Englewood was first given to the village by General John Engle in 1814. He built a post office there in 1827 and laid out a town square from which he named it after his plantation, Engelwood on the Scioto River. The original town square has been destroyed but its outline can still be seen across Cedar Street near where First National Bank now stands. In 1838, James Biddle founded what is now Copley University in what is now Englewood and donated land to make it an educational institution. In 1870, when Ohio became a state, Stark County formed part of it; however, because Englewood had not yet incorporated as a city, it remained within Stark County's borders until 1875 when it joined with Montgomery County to form Dayton Township. In 1902, Dayton Township erected a new courthouse complex in honor of Ulysses S. Grant which still stands today on Third Street east of Elmira Road (now US-23). On July 5th of that year Mayor Pinchot dedicated the new courthouse for $2 million dollars which was also money raised through local taxation for similar projects throughout Dayton Township including fire protection and street paving needs during prohibition times(). The building served as the municipal government center until 1974 when City Hall moved into its current location on Elmira Road just east of I-480/US- 23. On November 3rd of that year Englewood voters passed via referendum an ordinance creating their own water supply company with plans to start serving residents within one year should such an act become necessary due to lack of water service from neighboring communities or newly established villages dotting the surrounding countryside following World War II shortages caused by war production quotas dubbed "The Great Water Crisis".
