Englewood is a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio, located on the border of Butler and Wayne counties. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron-Southeastern Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Englewood is also included in the Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky Combined Statistical Area. The name "Englewood" comes from one of two settlements in what is now Butler County: Engle Road and Englewood Heights. The location for both settlements lay just east of present-day Utica, on a bluff overlooking the Scioto River. In 1814, John Stephenson bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land that he named after his brother-in-law, George Washington Carver (1763 – 1847). Carver had settled near Springfield, Illinois in 1788 and moved to northwestern Ohio to become a farmer and surveyor. He first traveled through Northeast Ohio before settling at various locations including this area in 1812; these areas then became known as Carver's Purchase or Stephenson's Purchase according to their original owners/landowners. In 1827, David Swayne purchased 1 acre (0.40 km²) from carver for $5 per year until such time as it could be developed into a village site with public buildings and a schoolhouse; this parcel became Swayne Park which still occupies that location today within reach of downtown Englewood by foot or bike if desired.—Note: This entire article was written without knowledge about what has happened to 1 acre sinceDavid Swayne died.— According to United States Census Bureau estimates taken in 2000, there were 4,897 people residing in Englewood Township when the census was taken; however only 3,955 residents lived in city limits (the wards within Clark County). Englewood is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Englewood was founded by Methodists in 1836 and named for David Englewood, an early settler. The first post office in Englewood was established in 1837. The name of the town changed from "David" to "Englewood" on November 1, 1845. On February 11, 1847, the first railroad reached Englewood from Chillicothe via Hillsboro and Ottawa Junction stations; this made it possible for people to reach their homes more easily than they had before. In 1865, the Belmont Railroad arrived and connected with the Cincinnati & Dayton Railroad at Union Station (later known as Lucasville). This made it easier for people to get around town and help make Steel Township into a thriving community. Butch Jones became mayor of Englewood in 1967 when he ran against incumbent John Hickenlooper; Jones won by over 50%, making him America's first openly gay mayor. In 1977-1981 Bob Ney served as Mayor of Englewood after being elected unopposed due to term limits set by Congress; Ney is most well-known for his role as founder and CEO of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company later renamed GEICO Holdings Inc., which was purchased by State Farm Corporation in 2014. After leaving office in 1981 following numerous scandals within city government including bribery and embezzlement charges linked to his predecessor's administration,[1] Ney started a successful business career that ended up taking him all around Ohio including stints as Mayor of Lima (1999-2001) and Cincinnati (2003-2007).[2][3] He currently resides in Delaware but still visits Ohio often.[4][5]
