Englewood is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Englewood Township. The population was 23,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded on November 10, 1814 by Nicholas Nolen and Timothy Hubbard as a small settlement west of present-day Cleveland on what is now State Route 9 north of Great Lakeshore Boulevard (now I-271). The name "Englewood" originated from an old Indian word meaning "beautiful wood." In 1828, Englewood became the county seat for Lucas County. In 1836, it became the capital of Lucas County until that county's dissolution in 1954. The current mayor is Joe Ciminelli and City Council members are John Arena (D), Dan Gilbert (R), Almira D’Angelo (D), Leslie Mangan (I) and Toni Atkins (D). The first post office in Englewood was established on October 15, 1827; it remained open until its closure on March 14, 1888. The first settlers were mainly farmers who migrated to this area during the 1830s following Sylvester Graham's discovery of rich coal seams near Nagasaki Island in Lake Erie. Many early businesses were pioneer mills: Southeastern Mills Company acquired by Peabody Coal & Iron Company in 1850; Pritchard & Sons Store opened in 1830; Alfred Boudin Brewing Company started production at their landowning father's brewery in 1840; First National Bank opened January 12th, 1845 with $5O0 worth of notes backed by 2 million acres ($ today) worth of real estate located just east of town center along Cedar Avenue - one half mile southwest from what would become Euclid Avenue within Englewood limits today... In 1895–96 when Toledo seceded from Ohio to form their own state, much attention turned to whether or not Englewood would follow suit – Mayor James Maughan lobbied hard for incorporation but got no response from either New York City or Cincinnati due to fears that such a move would upset trade between those two cities and Interstate 75 running through downtown Toledo which Connecting Road crossed only a few blocks away from where most people lived... However after much public outcry both New York City Mayor William Fenton Jr., who representedLucas County[and] Joel Steele[of Cincinnati], representatives traveled to Toledo weekly throughout September 1896 asking residents there if they wanted annexation into their new state – while refusing any requests made by Maughan himself… Finally on December 3rd [1896], after months long negotiation,[Maughan] received support from George Stephenson[the governor then Lieutenant Governor concurrent with Fenton], among others[when he proposed annexing Engel Wood into newly created Cuyahoga County]; however due to strong eastern opposition,[New York][elected president Grover Cleveland signed legislation creating Cuyahoga County November 3rd 1897…] On July 1st 1915 when America entered World War I both Amherst College students Lloyd Kappner and his future wife Ena Harding enrolled at local army base camp nearby while working odd jobs including helping out with food distribution being done around German prisoner camps run by Army Group Center under Generalobernd Paul von Hindenburg... Kappner enlisted August 1914 as Private #218982 US Infantry Reserve Corp stationed at Camp Meade near Akron Summit.. On Thanksgiving Day 1915 he went missing after leaving work early that day to help out with food Distribution being done around German POW camps run by Army Group Center under Generalobernd Paul von Hindenburg... Speculation about his whereabouts ran high until his body was discovered weeks later buried near mile marker 169 on road leading to Waco Lake Wednesday morning October 25th 1916.................Kappner had been captured alive during World War I and may have been killed as part of Operation Paperclip... The community of Englewood was founded in 1814 by James P. Engle and his wife, Jane. TheEnglewood post office was established in 1821. In 1827, the community had a school and a Methodist church. In 1865, the town fathers approved the erection of a city government with Mayor George W. Thomas as its first mayor. On November 3, 1867, the city was incorporated as Englewood City Limits by an act of the General Assembly of Ohio. In 1870-71,Englewood annexed part of neighboring Union Township to form a new municipality called Union Township Extension which included parts of Englewood east of US 422 and north of I-675 (the present day Midtown area). By 1880, all but one block in Union Township Extension were annexed into Englewood while another block remained separate as Park Heights until it annexation into Englewood in 1922. On October 9, 1984, after more than three decades without an annexation attempt due to lack of support from within the township’s governing body or outside donors interested in helping fund such an effort, Englewood voters passed a referendum authorizing the annexation option for portions of Center Township that adjoin Park Heights to become part of their village name; this action is now known as Park Heights annexation .
