Some people think that the first gun swivels were invented in Englewood, Ohio in 1853 by a man named John Sargent. Englewood is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 22,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area and is the most populous city in that area. Englewood has been settled since 1795. The first post office in Englewood was established on November 1, 1814. The current city hall was built in 1909 and replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire. The first Englishman to settle in what is now Englewood was John Stephenson who came from Connecticut in 1795. He purchased land east of present-day Garfield Heights and founded a small town called Stephensonville which he named for himself and his brother-in-law, Judge George Stephenson (1754-1837). In 1813, John Stephenson's son Christopher moved westward from Stephensonville with his family and platted the community of Englewood on 100 acres east of present day Garfield Heights. Christopher's grandson James Leland erected a log cabin near where the City Hall now stands as its first building on October 3, 1830. The first public meeting ever held in this new community occurred on February 24th, 1830 when sixty citizens met to discuss plans for erecting a schoolhouse and other important civic buildings within the new town limits. The settlement continued to grow during the early years of Ohio Statehood with several families moving into central parts of state until it reached its peak around 1800 when there were over 150 people living in Englewood proper along with some scattered outlying settlements including Stevensonville, Mayfield Village (later renamed North Huntingdon), Belmont Village (later renamed South Belmont), Hubbardstown Village (now spelled Hubbardston) and many others just outside of today's boundaries of present day Garfield Heights neighborhoods such as Mayfield Park/Belmont Woods/Garland Hills/Plymouth Township etc.. By 1825 however all but two or three families remaining inside centralEnglewoods boundaries had either departed for other locations within or outside Ohio due to various political changes or economic hardships brought about by rapid growth throughout much of northwestern Ohio during that period known informally as "the Great Land Rush." It wasn't until after Union victory at Gettysburg that things began to change dramatically within southwesternOhio...and especially northeasternOhio...owing largely to large influxes waves migration from Indiana & Illinois resulting largely from railroad construction & associated jobs opportunities during those high points...that burgeoning towns like Cincinnati & Dayton rapidly emerged as major cities & majority rural communities across portions277 square miles than now make up Columbus metroplex while little if any evidence remains extant contemporary supportive documentary evidence referring specifically thereto existing contiguous areas lying adjacent thereto prior thereto home rule charters granted hereinto notwithstanding thereby forever disclaiming any right thereto james leland

By 1814, a church and school had been erected in what is now the Englewood neighborhood. During World War I, many residents served in the military or did volunteer work to support their country. Some residents also established businesses in local neighborhoods such as the Englewood Mercantile Company and Gimbels Department Store. In 1957, when Interstate 75 was constructed through central Ohio, parts ofEnglewood were shifted closer to it and development accelerated outside of its boundaries.
