Englewood is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Englewood is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Stark metropolitan area. The community is named after John George Englewood (c. 1815 – c. 1865), an early settler and landowner in what was then Stark County. The first settlers to Englewood were James Henshaw and his family who arrived about 1785 from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania via the Great Britain trade route. They built a small log cabin on the current site of Englewood Village in 1787; it still stands today as a contributing property to the village center. John George EngleWOOD (1815 – 1865) moved to present day Starke Township in Stark County about 1830, and purchased a large tract of land north of Dayton on which he erected an house called "Donnybrook." This house served as both home and political power center for much of northeastern Ohio during the mid 1800s due to its location near transportation hubs such as Middletown and Dayton. In 1848, John G ENGLEWOOD married Mary Jane Knoppersmith (1819 - 1909), daughter of entrepreneur Levi KNOppersmith Sr., one ofthe most prominent figures in early industrial development in that area. Mrs ENGLEWOOD's influence continues to this day as one of mainstays behind many local businesses including her husband's business interests within their township until his death in 1951; hers continue through their son Jay Knoppersmith's ownership until 2016. Englewood, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded in 1814 by John Engle and others as an agricultural colony on the Scioto River for the purpose of cultivating cotton and other crops. The town became a city in 1902. The townsite at what is now Englewood was first purchased by John Engle from Nicholas Biddle in 1814, when Engle and his brothers-in-law, George Rogers and Thomas Mifflin, were farming near Lebanon, Pennsylvania. They named their new location "Englewood" after England's newly created county of ENGLEWOOD (now Cheshire). John Engle served as Township Treasurer for Scioto County from 1816 to 1819; he then served as Mayor of Portsmouth (now Portsmouth) from 1830 to 1831. On October 15, 1828, during the last session of the General Assembly of Ohio under Gov. James Kapp (a Democrat), Engle announced that he would not vote against a bill granting voting rights to African Americans following riots that evening throughout much of the Midwest over proposed measures to improve race relations there: "I can do nothing but deplore this measure," he said; "it deserves no support." He abstained on all twenty votes cast against it and was one of only two members—along with fellow Republican William Aiken—to sign an act repealing section 518(a) of the Revised Statutes (the Indian Removal Act), which granted citizenship to Native American Indians living east of Indiana Territory; this act also provided for deportation proceedings if they did not become citizens within six months. In 1840, when Scioto County became part of Union Territory Kansas Territory, John Engle moved his family from Portsmouth to Amesbury Township in that territory so they could be closer to relatives thereabouts who had already grown immune to White racism because they lived among Native Americans until becoming citizens some time earlier. In turn Amish settlers nearby acquired land adjacent to Parsons Ferry Dam on the Scioto River where they built what is now known as Parsons Ferry Village around 1795–1800 due largely to donations by local farmers Jacob Weiser (1748–1825) and David Robinson Sr.(1765–1847). The village site remained unincorporated until 1914 when it incorporated into nearbyEnglewood as its first municipality despite objections by many residents who saw it as an intrusion into their community values and lifestyles while also encroaching upon their privately owned farmland; such opposition soon disappeared when municipal leaders decided that incorporation would give them more power over zoning codes and public funding opportunities while still protecting home values within their communities while promoting social justice issues through elected officialship than through private enterprise or lobbying alone
The area now known as Englewood was first settled in the mid-19th century by a group of German immigrants. In 1853, a railroad was built through the area, and by 1870, Englewood had become one of the largest towns in Ohio. The town experienced growth during the American Civil War, with many soldiers living and working in the town. After the war, Englewood grew even faster, becoming one of the most populous towns in Ohio by 1880. The town's growth continued during World War II, with many businesses being opened in the town centre. In recent years,Englewood has seen some redevelopment due to its location within walking distance of various universities and other amenities.
