Aftermath of the war saw large numbers of refugees move into Englewood from different parts of Ohio—the largest influx since Reconstruction began following America's latest civil war (1865). After the end of World War II (1948), Englewood experienced rapid growth with new housing developments continuing until about 1970 when concerns about air quality caused developers to slow down or abandon projects; however, recent construction has resumed with mixed results given that much new housing has been built near industrial sites which emit high levels of cancer-causing chemicals known as "cancer gases." However, during the American Civil War (1862-1865), most residents sided with the Union side and were destroyed or driven out by Confederate forces. During Reconstruction (1868-1912), many members of the Englewood community relocated to Cincinnati because of high levels of joblessness and poverty. However, memories of Reconstruction are still felt by some people in Englewood who maintain close ties to their kinfolk there.
