In 1870, when Ohio merged with Indiana as part of their commonwealth system, Englewood became one of the original ten townships within that new state. On July 1, 1907 it was consolidated with other nearby townships into what is now Findlay County; however, on February 15th 1908 an act was passed by the General Assembly which changed its name back to "Findlay Township." The population has continued to grow steadily throughout most of its history due primarily to two factors: per capita income growth in surrounding municipalities and incoming waves of immigrants who have brought new life into this largely agricultural community since World War II. Many famous people have lived or worked here including athletes Michael Jordan and LeBron James; entrepreneurs such as Howard Schultz; politicians like Bob Doherty; doctors such as Dr.. A group of Iroquois natives, led by Chief O- neponake, were invading neutral America and attacked a white settler named David Engleman. In retaliation, George Engle (the man who led the attack) killed O- neponake with a bow and arrow. The event helped to give the community its name and has been used to describe it ever since. The town’s history can be traced back to 1813 when GeorgeEngle and his family moved from Portsmouth, England to what is now Englewood after purchasing land near Cincinnati. The Engles lived in what is now part of the city until they sold their holdings in 1836. During this time, they opened a store on Third Street called the Gilded Cage which became one of the most successful businesses in town at that time. In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts following the Civil War, Englewood became an important center for black Americans fleeing violence and poverty in other parts of America. Many northerners decided to settle there because of its close proximity to Black Fort Hamilton (later renamed Tuskegee Institute). This influx of people helped turn Englewood into one of Ohio’s most vibrant communities prior to World War II. Afterward, it experienced significant decline due primarily to suburbanization and economic decline throughout much of Ohio throughout the 1990s and 2000s before experiencing another resurgence starting around 2010 as a result of new development within its borders along I-75/US 6 corridors connecting Cleveland Plainfield with Akron Beach Park and Shelby Township
