Elyria, Ohio is a small town located in Stark County, Ohio. The population was 1,914 at the 2000 census. Elyria was founded in 1812 by John Ely and his wife Nancy. The community became a city in 1907. In 1959, Elyria voters approved annexation of the neighboring village of Defiance into the city limits. The first settler in what would become Elyria was John Ely who arrived in 1811 from Connecticut. He erected a log cabin on the banks of the Maumee River. By 1813, he had built two more cabins and established himself as an agriculturist and fur trader with holdings near present-day Toledo and Defianceville. In 1816, John Ely's son-in-law Benjamin Fenton purchased some land east of present day Elmira from Richard Knapp for $100 payable within 10 years or it would have been forfeited to him. In 1794, Captain George Washington Camp settled on land west of present day Elmira along the Scioto River where he erected a cabin named Fort Washington which served as his headquarters during his military campaigns against Native American tribes inhabiting that region (see alsoBattle of Fallen Timbers). Nineteen years later, George Washington Camp's grandson Major General James Hays advanced onto this same property to purchase much larger tracts including part of present day Defiance Township from Chief Joseph Chisholm for $1 per acre plus interest payments that continued until 1800; thus beginning what would be known as "the Townshend Purchase." In 1824, Reverend Solomon Storrs moved to Elyria from Canton after preaching there for several years.. After serving as pastor at First Baptist Church for four years (1822-26), Storrs returned to New York City where he set up shop at 104 State Street before arriving in Erie County in 1830 to open Bible classes at Bethel Chapel under Pastor Elijah Whitehead (see alsoWhitehead Movement). A few weeks after its establishment, Whitehead's church burned down but he rebuilt it using funds received from local residents–a move that helped inaugurate what would become known as religiousemeeting Associations throughout America during the 1830s and 1840s. Reverend Solomon Storrs' legacy lives on today with Bethel Chapel Missionary Baptist Church located just off US Route 22 between Lima and Depew Lakes outside Ofeldale
