Elyria, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. It lies at the southern border of the city of Cleveland and was part of the Elyria Township until it was annexed by Cleveland in 1892. The population was 576 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers to Elyria were David Sprague and his family who arrived in 1796 and laid out a plot near what is now State Road 9 south of town. They named their land "Sprague's Purchase" after David Sprague, one of their original owners. The Spragues ran a gristmill on their land for several years beforemoving to Canada in 1814 where they started a mill there also. In 1828, they moved again to Elyria where they built a new gristmill which still stands today. The mill operated until 1905 when it was destroyed by fire. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from Elyria served in military units including three members of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Unit Citation Committee who had come home to visit during that time period: George Wainwright (fifth generation resident), Abram Beach (grandson), and John Henshaw (nephew). There are numerous local gravesites associated with this conflict including those of General Philip Sheridan and Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Davenport Jr.. In 1920, Elyria voters adopted an ordinance establishing public schools within its limits; these schools would become known as Euclid Public Schools following annexation into Euclid Township in 1928. A second referendum held two years later permitted incorporation into Cleveland complete with its own school system without reference to Elyria Schools however residents voted overwhelmingly against incorporation both times due to fears that such would open up competition between the cities for educational resources while also limiting access to education for locals seekingdistance education opportunities outside Cleveland proper or even inside Ohio itself since annexation did not provide such facilities as libraries or playgrounds within its boundaries. Elyria, Ohio is a town located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,953 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a small cluster of log cabins on the present site of Elyria Central High School in 1837. It grew rapidly during the 1840s when settlers from other parts of the United States arrived to hear about land grants and homesteads available for purchase in central Ohio. By 1850, Elyria had a population of 350 residents and by 1860 it had reached 1,000 residents. In 1872, Elyria became an incorporated town under the name "Elyria." In 1902, it adopted its current name after its namesake—the County Seat (now downtown) of Cuyahoga County, Ohio—was moved from Mentor to Elyria for administrative convenience. The township seat remained at Central until 1925 when it relocated to its present location at Euclid Avenue and Superior Street due to funding problems with that town's library system; however, Central still remains synaptic with many aspects of life in early 20th century Elyria through annual events such as the Homecoming parade and carnival which are held there every year since 1925. During World War II, Elyria played an important role as both a munitions production center east of Akron and as a training ground for American soldiers who would go on to fight in Europe during Operation Overlord. In 1945–46, much progress was made towards redevelopment near Easton Road following fire damage done by tornado victims two years earlier; however,, economic difficulties halted any real momentum until aftermath development occurred along Euclid Avenue between Superior and Summit Streets beginning around 1990 which has seen continued growth since then culminating in a new elementary school being built adjacent to FirstEnergy Park which opened in fall 2016 just before harvest season; this has helped drive recent retail investment intotown while also attracting more people looking for cultural attractions than industrial jobs opportunities typical during slower times
