Elyria, Ohio is a small town located in the northwest corner of Ohio. The population was 7,497 at the 2000 census. Elyria is one of the oldest communities in the United States and has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. In 1814, General Nicholas Wayne founded Elyria as a stop on his journey from Washington D.C. to Youngstown (now Warren) in order to purchase land for the new military post he planned to establish there. The post was abandoned after only a few months whenNicholas Wayne died during an expedition into Kentucky without warning his settlers or commanding officer. The first white person to live in Elyria was John Fenton who arrived in 1793 with his family from Pennsylvania. He built a gristmill and store on the banks of the Scioto River which he named Fenton's Mill after himself and his brother-in-law, James Fenton Sr.. By 1800, there were ten families living in Elyria and seven stores employing seventy-six people including four blacksmiths and four farmers. In 1814, General Nicholas Wayne founded Elyria as a stop on his journey from Washington D.C., now Warren County, Ohio (northwest corner), to Youngstown (nowWarren County), Pennsylvania (southwest corner). This trip was part of an effort to purchase land that would be used for military posts between Washington D.C./Baltimore and Youngstown/Warren County so that soldiers could be stationed nearby while also expanding trade along this route throughout Northeast Ohio. After purchasing some property near present day Elyria, General Wayne set up shop at what is now called Old Fort Dearborn before moving into what is now known as George Street which led him directly onto what later became First Avenue where he established two mills - one powered by water power from the Scioto River while another used coal oil lamps – making it one of America’s first commercial towns! General Wayne remained active until 1840 when he died suddenly at age fifty-four while visiting friends near Lebanon Junction outside Pittsburgh PA; leaving behind three adult children: Nicholas Jr., Johnathan Jr., and Barbara Ann Dodge wife of Colonel Abraham Dodge – all adults who managed their father’s businesses side by side for several years until 1850 when Barbara Ann married Samuel Muhlenberg son of German immigrants who had settled in Holmesburg Township just east of Cleveland Heights OH; Samuel bought out Johnathan Jr.'s interest in Father's mill within five years! Immediately following General Wayne's death certain trustees selected twenty-one year old Joshua Speed “for meritorious services rendered both public & private” within minutes after learning about his nomination! With Joshua Speed serving as trustee until 1861 due to continuous illness then disability then rehiringrankilfiance Anna Elizabeth Hennepin daughter of Abram Hennepin III who had served since 1824 despite being only twenty years old at time!!! AfterJoshua Speed’s death service began again under second name Selectman Jonathan Dayton but continued nominally under selectmen rank starting with 3rd incumbent Jonathan White until 1870!!!!!
