In 1834, Elyria became part of Lucas County when that county was created from parts of Columbiana and Vinton counties. The first courthouse in what is now Elyria was built on State Road 3 west of town in 1835 by Judge James Mowery Sr., also an early settler. Lima Township was organized around 1840 and soon annexed by Elyria; according to USGS Maps as late as 1850 there were only two homes in Lima Township--one belonging to Captain John Barnes and one to Ebenezer Griggs (the father-in-law of future Governor Prentiss Cass). Most other families left during this time period because they were offered jobs or resettlementarin Ohio's new westward migration policy which favored European immigration over American labor demands. In 1846 Cleveland gave away 1/3rds interest in its public lands to each township within Euclid County for use as firewood for local farmers; this bounty helped spur growth among many small townships across central Ohio during the mid 1800s due to increased access to markets for agricultural products caused by railroads moving goods northward into America's heartland". Elyrian schools received state funding beginning in 1870 which allowed them greater autonomy from individual trustees; this trend continued until state consolidation following World War II . It was founded in 1827 and named for Colonel George Ely of Connecticut. The village of Elyria was organized in 1832 by David Chandler and others as a post office serving residents of the area surrounding the current town site. In 1837, David Chandler donated land to form the present-day city limits of Elyria. The city became an independent municipality on March 1, 1907 when it merged with the Village of East Cleveland to form Cleveland Municipal District No. 2. On July 1, 1954, Cleveland Municipal District No. 2 disbanded and all its municipalities were annexed into Cleveland proper as part of a larger municipal reorganization that took effect that year pursuant to section 524(a) of the Public Welfare Act (PWA).
