Elyria, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Zelienople Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elyria was Joby Clark on February 17, 1814 when he and his family came overland from Kentucky via the Great Lakes path. He named his land "Clark's Ferry", but it is thought that he may have named it after himself as he had many other children with several wives. On December 12, 1818, John Pritchard arrived in town from Boston with 5 others and founded the Pritchards Tavern on Main Street which served as a meeting place for early settlers and later became a hotel where General George Washington stayed during his military campaigns in America (the only time he ever stayed in an American city). In 1824 Captain James Winton arrived from Cincinnati with his wife and 9 children and established a small farm on what is now Greenfield Road near Elyria High School. The first school in what is now Elyria was built on Winton's farmhouse about 1830 by Methodist Reverend James Browning who also taught reading to young girlsinder mothers before their husbands could come home to work during the day; this school continued until 1840 when it burned down due to weather damage. In 1836 John Bancroft organized a wagon train carrying goods up the Maumee River from Cleveland to Toledo along what would become known as "The road of Tears." As they traveled through Elyria they passed through Bancroft's house which still stands today within walking distance of downtown; inside they found 4 barrels of whisky which must have been very exciting for these early travelers because whiskey wasn't legal until after 1870! Bancroft named his new town "Elyria" after his old home village near Hull England where he had lived while attending college before returning stateside to start anew under new circumstances; this settlement would grow rapidly into one of America's largest towns by 1850 thanks to its location close to major transportation points such as railroads and waterways – making it easy for people to trade goods and services across country without having to go far away! By 1860 there were over 1500 residents living in what would become known as "The City," including 300 farmers who grew corn, wheat, hay, apples, potatoes, etc., along with numerous merchants, artisans and workers who supplied everythingfrom shoeshine parlors to breweries! The shooting of Dorner was much less deadly- only three people were hurt when he opened fire on police officers near Los Angeles International Airport. The Dallas shootout was also one of the first time gunshots were used as part of an investigation into a crime scene. Previously, investigations would typically involve using drugs or physical evidence to identify suspects. Law Enforcement Cases: Law enforcement killings have been on rise over the past few decades. In 1990, there were 55 law enforcement deaths nationwide; this number increased to 88 by 2000[1]. Most of these killings occur duringitive moments within law enforcement- such as when police officer shoot unarmed civilians or when robbers escape after taking hostages.[2] Law enforcement fatalities can be attributed to a variety of causes- from natural disasters (such as hurricanes) to gang violence.[3] Despite this high level of fatalities, however, fatal shootings by law enforcement agents have decreased significantly since 2000[4]. This decrease may be due to changes in policing tactics or equipment which makes it harder for officers to kill bystanders while they are performing their duties[5]. Elyria is a city in Ohio, United States. The population was 16,813 at the 2000 census and 24,521 at the 2010 census. Elyria is the county seat of Lucas County. The area now known as Elyria was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The first townships were established in 1801 and were named for generals John Adams and Nathanael Greene. In 1825, Elyria became an incorporated town when it was part of the Northwest Territory of Ohio. It lost its incorporation status in 1942 but has regained it since then. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his forces from Cairo to become commander of all Union forces in the Western Theater during the American Civil War. He recommended that Elyria be selected as one of his headquarters locations because he felt that it would be a strategic center for operations due to its proximity to other military installations and its railroads which contributed to its relative wealth at that time.[1] On November 15, 1862, General Sherman’s army entered Elyria without battle after having driven through much of southern Lucas County.[2][3] This event helped spark heavy industry development around Elyria which continued until World War II when many factories closed due to bombings by USAAF strategic bombers over Europe; however some continue operating today including Alcoa Aluminum Company (AAC) which is headquartered in downtown Elyria[4]. The post-war period saw heavy growth across all fields within Elyria thanks toleeia’s location on two railroad lines: The Toledo & Erie Railroad (T&E) and the Cleveland Main Line Railroad (CMH). Notable businesses located throughout this time include JB Hunt Coal Company (JBHC), HEB Incorporated (HECO), Allied Biscuits Corporation (ABC), GEICO Incorporated/General Electric Companieshares/GEICO $100 Bills Corporation/General Electric Co-Operatives company[5], Wacoal Paper Products Company Ltd./Wacoal Paper Products Co., inc./Wacoal Paper Products Corp./Allied Paper Products Corporation[6], Alcoa Aluminum Company Headquarters (/Alcoa aluminum company/)and First National Bank Building (/First national bank building/, now known as Wells Fargo Place).[7],[8] During World War II most production stopped outside America due to lack of resources but companies such as Alcoa Aluminum Company continued operations; however several industries did not have any significant growth due toWWII bombing raids; these included rubber products and plastics manufacturing plants built near Flint, Michigan while aluminum smelting took place near Sandusky, Ohio,[9] among others. After 1945 many local factories closed with few remaining within town limits although some continuing operations today including Hecht Brewery Holdings LLCs Distilled Spirits Division (/Hecht Brewery Holdings/ distilling liquor)/Hecht Brewing Company LLCs Brewing Division/(hectt brewery holdings llc brewing division)) Some notable residents during this time include Mayor Denny Barnes who served from 1969 until 1976,[10],[11] Dr Richard Auerbach who served from 1978 until 1988,[12],[13],[14],[15],[16], businessman Dick Eisner who served from 1990 until 2002,[17],[18], Congressman George Voinovich who served from 1986 until 1992,[19][/20] Representative Jim Renacci who represented district 10 between 1999 and 2001[21](renacci@ohio10house). Current Mayor David Brown replaced Barnes in 2006 after he won re-election defeating incumbent Rich Beavers by just over 2%, making him one of only three mayors ever elected into office with less than 50% percent Caucus vote.[22].
