Elyria is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 23,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elyria was founded in 1847 by John Ely and his brother Isaac Ely as a small village on the Scioto River near what is now Muskingum County. The name "Elyria" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where corn grows." The first town meeting in what would become Elyria took place on July 10, 1847, when John Ely proposed to establish a town on the Scioto River due to its location between two rivers which could support agricultural production: “The Scioto River being navigable for vessels up to about sixty feet wide and four hundred yards long”; “It will be but little more than an hour’s journey from this point by stages boat or wagon to both markets at Dayton, where there are abounds of provisions and other necessary articles”; and “I believe it will have great advantages over any other place for settlement until We can get canal access from Akron Proper through that part of our country lying within our present limits” (Parksman 3/1/2004). In 1849, Isaac Ely donated land east of present-day downtown Elyria to form Hoyt Park Cemetery (). Elyria experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city on April 14, 1902 (from rural area called Shelby Township) thanks largely to railroad construction. Railroads brought jobs and development into First Third Street Business District which stretched along Elmira Avenue between Miami Avenue and Broadway Boulevard (the current site of Jackson Square), soon followed by businesses along First Third Street itself north past State Fairgrounds (now Harrisonburg Road) before terminating at Rankin Road just south of today's University Circle shopping mall across I-675 from downtown Euclid – one mile south of what would become Miller Motorsports Park Raceway today. By 1920, another major rail line linked Cleveland with Toledo via Athens Junction: Amtrak ran passenger trains through western Ohio stopping at Euclid Terminal Railroad Station where goods were unloaded onto flatcars then transported east across I-675 towards Toledo before finally entering Detroit downriver

In 1915, Elyria amalgamated with the City of Akron to form the present-day Akron–Elyria metropolitan area which had a population of 43 million people as of 2016
