Elyria began being developed as a farming community during the 1840s when railroads were developing through central Ohio looking for new markets for their products such as cotton and other goods produced in southern Indiana or Kentucky where transportation costs were lower than in eastern Pennsylvania or western Maryland where prices were higher because there was more distance between production sites. By 1850 many farmers had moved away from land that they had acquired through Donation Land Act grants given them freehold title to tracts exempt from taxation under Article 3 Section 10 of the United States Constitution while others continued farming but raised cattle or fished using swampy soil near waterbodies like Muskegon Bayou which drained into Lake Erie rather than being used for agriculture In 1851 James Hargrave organized investors who bought 4500 acres adjoining Muskegon Bayou southward from what is now Lyndhurst Avenue within present day Scioto Township — about what is now Northside Boulevard — raising money through auctioning off 160 acres valued at $6000 per acre plus interest until two years later when he sold another 8000 acres comprising much today's downtown area valued at over $200 million incorporating much commercial property along Third Street between Westland Avenue & Eastland Avenue northeast corner with Griggs Road NW

Elyria was founded in 1824 by James Ely and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s, due in part to its location on the high ground near what is now downtown Cincinnati. In 1837, Elyria became a city and was renamed Cincinnati after George Stephenson's new railway system brought goods and passengers from Liverpool direct to the city.
