Elyria was founded in 1824 as the town of Bucyrus and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Great Lakes. The city was named after General James H. Wilson, who served in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. In 1865, Union forces sacked Bucyrus and burned down all of its buildings, leaving only a few cannons and rifles behind. Over time, gun magazines became an important part of local culture and economies in Elyria. Many businesses grew up around these stores, providing jobs for locals and raising money for civic projects. Elyria, Ohio is an incorporated city in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,834 at the 2010 census. Elyria is the largest city in Trumbull County and the county seat of Trumbull County. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elyria has a rich history dating back to 1824 when it was known as "The Village". The first post office in Elyria was established in 1827 and named for General James Paulding. In 1836, Elyria became a town under the name of "New Salem". In 1840, it changed its name to "Elyria" after General William Silliman who had been instrumental in leading America during the Mexican–American War. The first election for mayor and council took place on November 3rd of that year with Lucius Atherton being elected Mayor with 63% of the vote while Daniel Sprague received 26%. On December 11th of that year, voters passed a resolution declaring their intention to change the name back to New Salem should they not receive an answer from Elyria within 30 days. In 1863, Elyria became part of Uniontown Township which also included neighboring towns such as North Olmsted and Willow Grove. On February 1st of that year Uniontown Township was merged into Trumbull County as well as all other township boundaries within Trumbull County were eliminated effective February 1st so that every township would be a county-level unit (excluding Waterford). Consequently, on March 4th of that yearTrumbull County renamed itself after Elyria – becoming one municipality with 21 separate townships within it including those in Uniontown Township plus Cedarville ( now Defiance), Sharon Heights ( now Shaker Heights), South Euclid ( now Strongsville) and Whitehall (now Lima). On July 15th 1865 local resident John Daugherty presented petitions signed by over 100 residents wishing to form a new school board which would serve all 21 townships within Trumbull County along with Cedarville; Shaker Heights; South Euclid; Whitehall; Defiance; Armstrong Mills; Lockport Harbor; Northfield Heights; Walled Lake; Mount Pleasant Borough and Winterset Borough among others seeking incorporation into what would become called “The Great Lakes School District” having previously beenSchool Board No 2 & 3 located outside Of assignments published by Superintendent George Lounsbury on June 14th 1865 therefore no member present due To resignation or death any information may be incorrect or missing please email me at gordon@ohioedmissions.org if you have additional information I am happy to provide additional sources

Elyria is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Elyria County. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Elyria is located on the Scioto River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north-northwest of Cleveland and 30 miles (48 kilometers) south-southwest of Toledo. The Scioto River forms part of the border between Elyria and Butler counties. The first European settlers arrived in 1795, when George Washington's forces fought a Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Elyria. George Washington's brother James led a group of militiamen into what is now Elyria to scout out land for his new colony. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded Michigan Territory through this region and drove Native Americans from their homes; this event is known as the Invasion of Ohio or Jackson's War. Aftermath included large numbers of refugees who crossed the Scioto River into Ohio during that time period In 1828, Ohio Statehood was granted to Ohio by President John Quincy Adams; Elyria became its capital under that arrangement A post office called "Elyria" was established in 1831, and remained in operation until 1907 . The first newspaper printed in town was published on October 13th, 1836 by Wm Hite & Bros.; it continued publication until 1880 In 1840s–1850s many mills were built along the Scioto River due to its excellent water quality; milling continued until mid-19th century In 1830s–1840s there were no schools in town so children attended public school for two years before moving back home for four years A high school was opened up again around 1860 but closed within a few years because enrollment had dropped below 100 students At present day only one high school exists which offers classes leading up to graduation: Youngstown Community College
