Elyria was founded by General George Washington in 1796 as a trading post on the Great Miami River. It served as the capital of Butte County from 1811 to 1813 and again from 1830 to 1840. The Erie Canal ran through Elyria for two miles (3 km) before reaching Lima, Ohio, east of Elyria. The first permanent residents were German immigrants who arrived between 1800 and 1802; they built log homes near the canal's mouth. In 1807, the Utopia Company organized a group of investors to build a road from Toledo to Cincinnati overland using land grant money that had been awarded to them by President James K. Polk for his effort to improve trade between the United States and Europe during the Mexican–American War.
