Elyria, Ohio is a small town located in theMidwestern United States. The population was 9,384 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mahoning County. Elyria was founded in 1831 by Captain John Ely and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office was established in 1832. In 1870, Elyria became a city and it continued to be its own municipal government until it merged with neighboring unincorporated communities on May 1, 1898. Today, Elyria is an agricultural community with a total area of about 52 square miles (132 square kilometers). The town has a significant manufacturing presence: It is home to three major companies—Cabela's Game Outfitters, Wacker Chemical Co., and American Weavers—and five smaller businesses employing over 300 people. The economy of Elyria has been based largely on agriculture since before it became a city. Today, there are two primary industries: meatpacking and machine shops; but also dominant are services such as real estate and accounting. A number of small businesses have closed or been sold off in recent years as the local economy has become increasingly dominated by large employers outside the town limits. There are no public schools within walking distance of most residents; however, private schools can be found in surrounding villages and townships. In addition to its small-town feel, which makes for slowerpaced life overall among residents who often interact primarily through their jobs or families member(s), Elyria also boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Mahoning County according to 2013 FBI statistics—the only municipality within that category with less than 100 violent crimes per 100,000 residents over 10 years old! Elyria, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The Elyria post office was established in 1847 and discontinued operations in 1968. The community achieved national attention as the location of the 1999 movie "The Great Gatsby". The first Europeans to visit what is now Elyria were French traders who passed through the area on their way from Canada to trade with the native nations. In 1794, George Washington's expedition explored the lower Great Lakes region and named them for his hometown of Georgetown, Kentucky. On July 6, 1800, a group of settlers led by Captain Anthony Wayne arrived at Elyria from Battle Creek and built a log cabin on present-day Market Square. Captain Wayne became one of Elyria's earliest leaders and played an important role in developing its economy and social life. In 1817-1818 US President James K. Polk sent military columns into central Ohio under General Jonathan McIntosh to suppress Native American revolts throughout the Northwest Territory which included much of what is now Butler County. McIntosh discovered that while he was marching through Elyria village square on September 12th 1817 he encountered a group of Indians who had been hiding among local farmers resistance to his troops march through their villages unannounced. McIntosh ordered his men not to fire upon the Indians but instead return home without injury or capture; this event is commemorated by a plaque located at Market Square today which reads: "On Duty October 12th1817 -returned safe & sound October 20th." Captain Wayne soon after moved his family from market square to a new location about two miles east on Main Street where they remain today. Within five years he had built four more houses - all still standing - within sight of each other on present day Elmira Road (now part of SR 7). By 1830 Captain Wayne had organized a water authority here which provided town residents with piped water for their residences and gardens until approximately 1850 when electric service arrived; during this time also three churches were erected (one still stands) including First Baptist Church which was dedicated in 1840 by Revs John Dewsbury and Isaac Hixon Sr.. Father Duffy served as pastor there until his death in 1907 when responsibility for church administration fell to Reverend Wm Jernigan who remained pastor until 1951 when it was transferred to current Rev Dr Richard Neuman.. A millrace running east-west just northeast of town center formed part of early stagecoach routes between Cincinnati/Hamilton county and Chicago; traffic stopped briefly at various locations along these routes while travelers walked or ran along the stream bank below rapids before continuing onward unimpeded across wide open meadows beyond civilization near modern day Minerva MI Today’s Elyria rests atop some Archeological remains dating back over 10K years! It’s interesting how many places have been mentioned or documented herein yet very few people have ever visited! Perhaps one reason may be because most people are aware only about events that occurred during World War 2? Anyway lets enjoy our little piece Of America while we can!"
