Eastlake, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. The population was 24,895 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Eastern edge of Akron and forms an enclave within Scioto County. The first permanent settler in what is now Eastlake was Nicholas Wright who arrived in 1788 from Rhode Island. He named his new community after himself, Eastlake Manor or "East Lick Manor." In 1814, James Biddle bought land from Nicholas Wright and developed it into a town with a square mile (1 km²) block grant for each settler. The townsite name derived from "east" because it lay east of where he lived at 216th Street and Prospect Avenue in what is now known as Mahoning Township. In 1824, the legislature changed the name to Eastlake when they decided that all places east of Lake Erie should have their own unique name instead of using those given to them by other settlements such as Lorain, Strongsville and Mayfield Heights. The town's charter was granted on February 7, 1825 During its early years, Eastlake experienced prosperity thanks to its location on major transportation routes: the Erie Canal passed through town; Major John Dennison founded Dennison Manufacturing Company which manufactured farm equipment; both railroads came through town; and agricultural production increased due to good soil conditions, helped by generous subsidies from federal agents such as Andrew Jackson . After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, eastern manufacturing declined while westward migration increased economic activity in downtown Akron . However , during this period some aspects of daily life were not changed much: services continued to be provided by white citizens while black citizens worked outside the settlement until 1969 when African Americans began moving into Eastlake proper
Eastlake is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lake County. The population was 21,848 at the 2010 census, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Ohio. Eastlake is located on the shore of Lake Erie, north of Cleveland and east of Akron. The first settlers to what is now Eastlake were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in 1795. In 1806, they built a log cabin on what is now Beaver Dam Creek Road. They named their town after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia which they had seen from their farmhouse. The first settler to live in what is now Eastlake was James Crain who arrived in 1810 and started a mill on Beaverdam Creek Road. A Post Office called "Eagle" was established here on December 12, 1811 under the name "Cincinnati". The town charter was issued January 10, 1814 by President James Kappley with its current name as it stands today - "Eastlake". In 1825, John Richardson erected a gristmill on Whitefish Creek near present-day south Main Street while he farmed there; this mill later became known as Richardson's Mills Incorporated (now part of FirstEnergy Corporation). Drury & Howe shipyards were also founded here during this time period; these companies produced ships for both military and commercial purposes including those used by Lake Erie shipping companies such as Huygens & Co., Erie Canal Company and Lakeshore Line along with many others throughout much of North America during this time period In 1830, local resident Elijah McCoy purchased land east of Whitefish Creek from Wm J Fenton for $1 leasehold title; McCoy developed this land into an agricultural village that would include homes, barns and other buildings for his people He served as Mayor from 1840 to 1850 In May 1861 when Union forces invaded Great Lakes region following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his troops across the river into central Ohio to attack Eastlake before marching northeast towards Cleveland . On July 5thGeneral Beauregard arrived at Eagle Ford just south of town and ordered General Prentiss to march eastward towards Cleveland while his division attacked West Side Hill near today's University Circle; however due to weather conditions Prentiss' division did not move forward until July 6th when he finally reached Easton where they burned all bridges over Monongahela River preventing reinforcements from reaching BeauregardHQ . This action effectively ended Confederate efforts within eastern Ohio
