Eastlake, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Muskingum County. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1801, Eastlake was founded by John Shore as a town in what is now Muskingum County. The first settler in Eastlake was named Samuel Beasley and he built his home on the present site of Shaw Avenue about 1800. By 1805, Eastlake had a school and a store. In 1821, Isaac Brocknell purchased land east of downtown from John Shore for $5 per acre (1/4 mile). Brocknell founded Brockville Settlement which became Brockville Township in 1824 and then Eastland Township in 1830. In 1840, George Washington Stephenson donated land to make way for the erection of an Erie Canal and east-west road running through Muskingum County; this area became known as Stephenson's Purchase Stream District or Stephenson's Townships until 1946 when it became part of Muskingum County again. For many years after that date, much development took place without any formalVillage incorporation until 1952 when Eastlake incorporated as a Village under Act No 71-1952 which provided for village government with Police Department, Fire Department etc.; today's Village has its own website where all information can be found including minutes from various meetings
Eastlake is a city in northwest Ohio, United States. The population was 27,317 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. The town of Eastlake was founded in 1812 by General David Dixon and named for him, east of the mouth of the Little Miami River on land that he had bought from the Shawnee Indians. The first store in town was built by Eli Whitney in 1824. In 1829, John Davenport organized a township out of parts of what were then part of Lucas County and called it Eastlake Township. In 1830, James Krieger opened a store in what is now downtown Eastlake and started to sell goods from his home on Clinton Street. A post office was established at Eastlake in 1834, and became an important commercial center during the 19th century. By 1840, east side streets were being developed parallel to Clinton Street as business districts grew larger northward along the riverfront while west side streets remained residential until after World War II when they began becoming commercial again with growth along I-70 nearsthe city limits. In 1850, residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name "East Lansing". On December 14, 1860, mayor Matthias Hecker announced that City Hall would be moved from Lansing to East Lake because there wasn't enough space within the new city limits for all its activities (including government). The new City Hall burned down on October 1st 1861 (the old building still stands) but this did not stop Mayor Hecker from proceeding with his plans; on November 12th 1861 he submitted legislation annexing portions of Kenton County including much of present-day Lucas County including East Lake which went into effect on January 1st 1862 with Mayor Hecker as its first mayor On February 17th 1862 an act was passed authored by Representative Daniel Guthrie entitling citizens of unincorporated areas east or south thereof within 2 miles (3 kilometers)of any public house or tavern licensed by said Board within 4 years beforeJanuary 1st1862to intermix with those living therein and form one community entitled "East Lansing". This Act led to increased calls for incorporation throughout eastern Ohio due to fears that large numbers of predominantly white people would move into newly annexed territory without contributing anything thereto
