The land that makes up Eastlake was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1811, John Lennon was born here. One of his ancestors, James McCartney, founded Eastlake Village on this land in 1922. The name "Eastlake" comes from a location east of Lake Erie on Long Branch Road (now Canfield Rd.), where early ferryboat operators used to take passengers across the lake to reach what is now Akron and other settlements near present-day Cleveland. In 1842, during Ohio's Mexican–American War, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Eastlake on its way to Battle Creek; as a result, many residents of EastLake enlisted or were drafted into the military and fought for Jackson. In 1849–50 the town purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Robert Hetzel and built a mill thereon which became one of America's leading mills until it burned down in 1865. The town was re-established as an agricultural community with rice farming being its mainstay until 1907 when steel production began making Eastlake an important steel center east of Cleveland. Assteel production declined following World War II – thanks largely to new technology – so too did economic activity around EastLake until only agriculture remains today although some light industry has recently redeveloped within walking distance of downtown EastLake proper since 2000 when it opened an arena/park complex called Quicken Loans Arena which seats over 20,000 people with state-of-the art amenities such as cardiovascular exercise equipment and 3G wireless internet access available inside as well as outside throughout all levels including upper bowl areas located just beyond Section 102 Row G between Section 1013[1] sections seat about 12K each making this one of largest arenas north of Chicago - but attendance has dropped significantly due mainly to opening prices for sports events becoming increasingly expensive while Quicken Loans Arena continues to languish financially ever since its opening - even though tickets are still available online for purchase like any other sporting event especially considering how much money Quicken Loans Arena has made off its bailout by Cuyahoga County taxpayers more than anything else! To make matters worse they have also turned their back on their original Main Street grid plan which would've seen them move their iconic QLG building onto Fifth Street facing Euclid Avenue developing what would've been a premier address right next door to One FirstEnergy Center another $1B+ energy company that plans on building not one but two gigantic towers next door each providing vast amounts sunlight both day and night once finished!! This will be only their 4th NBA team after joining Miami Heat & LA Clippers etc....... yet they're trying to build something that won't even pencil into their skyline!!! What kind of future do we actually want for our city???????
