In 1830, anti-slavery activists began to move to East Lake after learning about fugitive slaves living there illegally under free labor contracts with local farmers. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Battle Creek Unionist troops burned down part of the Platte River bridge over which Eastern State Road crossed into Cincinnati because they believed that General Ulysses S. Grant's army would enter Cincinnati through that route instead of via Battle Creek Bridge which lay just south of their position on the Scioto River valley between Greenville and Mount Carmel Hills neighborhoods along SR 10/SR 675 near downtown Cincinnati proper
