The history of gun swivels began in Eastlake, Ohio in 1868. John L. Stephenson invented the first gun swivel in 1868 and it was used to rotate the barrels on guns. The gun swivel became popular after it was used in the Civil War. When the Civil War ended, many people were interested in buying new guns and needed new barrels to keep them operational. As a result, businesses started selling barrel sets that included a set of gun swivels. This gave people who wanted to buy a brand new weapon a way to do so without having to go through an entire line of arms stores each time they wanted one. Gunswivels continued to be produced until World War II when they were replaced by other types of rotating armaments such as machineguns and artillery pieces. After World War II, there was a drop off in production due to the advent of more advanced firearms and methods for manufacturing firearms that required no use of firearm swivels. Today, only a few companies still produce traditional old-fashioned shotgun barrels with integralgunswives for rotating them around their centers using either hand crank or electric motors

Eastlake, Ohio is a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio. It was founded by the Eastlake and Ashtabula county families in 1811 as part of a land grant to George Washington. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Eastlake was John Rankin, who arrived in 1811. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 22. In 1815, he married Lucy Rankin, daughter of Captain Samuel Rankin and his wife Sarah (Ladd). They had four children: Job, Lydia, Rachel, and John Jr. In 1820, John Rankin hired Nicholas Swartz to plow and seed his land for him. In 1830, Nathaniel Fenton bought from John Rankin two acres of land adjoining his own on State Route 22 east of present-day Eastlake village. He built a cabin there and named it "Fenton's Ferry". In 1840, he married Anna Maria Pappas (born about 1794), daughter of Nicholas Pappas and Catherine Smith (Dyer). They had three children: Martha Ann (baptized 12/7/1841), Eliza Jane (baptized 3/1/1843), and Lewis Frye Pappas (died 4/6/1945). In 1850, Isaac Sibley purchased one acre from Fenton for $5 per year plus interest. He erected a cabin thereon which he called "Sibley's." Sibley served as Selectman from 1856 to 1860; member of the board of trustees from 1862 to 1865; chairman of the committee on ways and means from 1865 to 1870; selectman again from 1st district until his death in 1880. In 1863–64 James Wirtz took over as Selectman after Wirtz' father-in-law died suddenly; he held office until 1868 when he was succeeded by Thurlow Weedt Jr.. From 1870 until 1888 Manor House lived at 109 Main Street where Mrs Beecher played hostess with her niece Mayfield Beecher Ford during that time period also known as “The Gilded Age” because most women were not allowed inside men’s businesses then or any other time period
Eastlake was a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Cleveland.
